Cutoff Analysis

Will JoSAA 2026 Cutoffs Drop with 4,470 New Seats?

The answer depends on which institute and branch — here's a data-driven breakdown of where to expect relief

Cutoff Impact by Segment

Top IITs (IIT B/D/M/K/R) — CSE, Math & Computing

No change

Still the most sought-after programs. 0–500 rank relaxation at best.

New IITs (Jodhpur, Mandi, Indore, Palakkad) — All branches

Moderate drop

500–2,000 rank relaxation likely due to significant seat additions.

NITs — CSE/ECE at top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Calicut)

Minimal change

High demand absorbs the ~637 new NIT seats. Marginal change only.

IIITs — Mid and smaller IIITs with new seats

Notable drop

1,578 new seats spread mainly in growing IIITs. Cutoffs may ease by 1,000–5,000 ranks.

New branches (AI, DS, Cybersecurity) at any institute

Unpredictable

No prior year data. Could be competitive if demand is high, or moderate initially.

New GFTIs (9 new institutes in 2026)

No prior cutoff

First-year cutoffs set fresh. Cannot compare to 2025 data.

How to Use This Information for Choice Filling

  1. 1Start with last year's closing ranks as your baseline — this is your best available predictor
  2. 2For institutes that added seats (IIT Jodhpur +140, IIT Mandi +120, etc.), be slightly more optimistic — add options 500–2,000 ranks above your estimated range
  3. 3For IIITs, consider adding more options since they have the most new seats and variety
  4. 4Do not assume any change for IIT Bombay/Delhi/Madras CSE — these will be as competitive as ever

1
Will JoSAA 2026 cutoffs (closing ranks) drop because of new seats?
Partially, and selectively. The 4,470 additional seats represent a 7.1% increase overall, but the impact on cutoffs varies widely. Branches at new or expanding institutes may see measurable rank relaxation (500–3,000 rank drop). Top branches like CSE at IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras will not see any meaningful change.
2
Where will JoSAA 2026 cutoffs drop the most?
The biggest cutoff drops are expected at: (1) IIITs where 1,578 new seats were added — especially smaller IIITs with large expansions, (2) New GFTIs joining for the first time, (3) New-age branches (AI, Data Science, Semiconductor) at newer IITs and NITs where historical demand is still building, (4) IIT Jodhpur, Mandi, Indore, Palakkad — these added significant seats.
3
Where will JoSAA 2026 cutoffs stay the same or get harder?
CSE at IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Roorkee — these are essentially at capacity and will remain the most competitive. Mathematics & Computing at IITs will also stay very tight. IISc BTech programs (joining first time) will attract top rankers and may set extremely high bars.
4
How do I use the new seat data to build my JoSAA choice list?
Use previous year cutoffs as a baseline, then apply these adjustments: (1) For institutes that added seats, consider adding some lower-priority choices that were just above your estimated rank last year, (2) For IISc, treat it like a top IIT in your choice list, (3) For new GFTI branches, use opening rank as a guide since no historical cutoff exists.
5
Does JEE Advanced difficulty level also affect 2026 IIT cutoffs?
Yes. Cutoffs depend on seat count AND exam difficulty. If JEE Advanced 2026 was tougher than 2025, scores compress, potentially shifting cutoff ranks. Conversely, an easier paper spreads scores out. The seat increase is one factor — always consider the overall candidate pool and paper difficulty together.
