JoSAA 2026 vs 2025: Seats Comparison

The differing growth rates across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs in any given year reflect fundamentally different institutional constraints and growth stages rather than differing levels of government priority or investment. IITs, as the oldest and most established category, generally have the least remaining headroom for rapid seat growth given their more constrained campus infrastructure and deliberately maintained faculty-student ratios — meaning their year-over-year growth tends to be the most conservative among the four categories, concentrated mainly at the newer, still-maturing IITs. NITs sit in a similar but slightly more flexible position, being a large and mature network but one with somewhat more room for gradual, broad-based capacity additions across many institutes simultaneously.

IIITs and GFTIs, by contrast, represent categories with genuinely more structural room to grow — IIITs through the PPP model's inherent flexibility to add capacity and even entirely new institutes relatively quickly, and GFTIs through both the periodic onboarding of new institutes into the JoSAA framework and capacity expansion at existing ones. Understanding this underlying pattern helps set realistic expectations for future years too: don't expect IITs to suddenly show IIIT-level percentage growth in a typical year, since the two categories operate under fundamentally different capacity constraints, and similarly, don't be surprised if IIITs or GFTIs continue to show the fastest relative growth in future admission cycles as this broader trend continues.
