Artificial Intelligence and Data Science have moved from being niche electives within Computer Science departments to standalone, dedicated B.Tech programs at a growing number of IITs, NITs, and IIITs — a shift that mirrors how quickly the underlying technologies have moved from research curiosities to mainstream industry demand. This isn't purely an academic trend; it reflects a genuine restructuring of what Indian engineering education considers foundational, similar to how Computer Science itself grew from a specialization within Electrical Engineering into its own dominant discipline over previous decades. For a JEE candidate today, this means AI and Data Science are no longer something you necessarily need to pursue as a graduate specialization after a general engineering degree — you can now target them directly at the undergraduate level at an increasing number of reputable institutes.

That said, it's worth understanding that "AI & Data Science" as a program label isn't standardized across every institute — some offer it as a fully standalone four-year branch with its own dedicated curriculum and faculty, others fold it into Computer Science as a formal specialization track, and still others offer overlapping content under different naming (Data Science & Engineering, AI & ML, Computational Data Science). When comparing options across institutes, read the actual curriculum structure rather than assuming the program name alone tells you everything about course content, faculty depth, or how the degree will be labeled on your final transcript and eventual resume.

It's also worth understanding how AI/DS programs at IIITs specifically differ from those at IITs and NITs, since IIITs are structurally built around computing disciplines in a way general engineering institutes are not. An IIIT's entire faculty base, lab infrastructure, and institutional identity typically centers on IT and computer science, meaning a new AI/DS program there often benefits from deeper existing expertise in adjacent areas — natural language processing, computer vision, distributed systems — that a newly launched AI/DS program at a broader engineering institute may still be building out. This doesn't automatically make an IIIT's AI/DS program superior in every case, but it's a genuine structural advantage worth factoring in in when comparing similarly-ranked options across institute types.
