Why India Needs These Engineers Now

💾

India Semiconductor Mission (IndSemi)

₹76,000 crore investment to build chip fabs — Micron, Tata, and Foxconn are setting up plants. Needs 50,000+ semiconductor engineers by 2028.

🔒

CERT-In & Cyber Suraksha

India faces 1.4 million cyber attacks annually. CERT-In mandate requires more certified cybersecurity professionals in all critical infrastructure sectors.

📱

5G & IoT Security

The rollout of 5G and explosion of IoT devices creates massive demand for security engineers who understand hardware-level and network-level vulnerabilities.

🏦

BFSI Sector Demand

Banks, insurance, and fintech are the largest employers of cybersecurity professionals in India — paying 30–50% more than equivalent software roles.

1
Which IITs offer Semiconductor Technology programs in JoSAA 2026?
IIT Jodhpur, IIT Hyderabad, and several newer IITs have been adding semiconductor and VLSI-focused programs. IISc Bangalore's Materials Science & Engineering program (25 seats, new to JoSAA 2026) also has a strong semiconductor research component. Check the official seat matrix for the complete and up-to-date list.
2
Why is there a sudden growth in Semiconductor seats at IITs and NITs?
India's Semiconductor Mission (IndSemi) — a ₹76,000 crore initiative — is driving domestic chip manufacturing with companies like Micron, Tata, and Foxconn. This requires thousands of VLSI, chip design, and semiconductor process engineers. Institutes are creating programs to meet this demand.
3
Are Cybersecurity BTech programs new in JoSAA 2026?
Some are new, some are expanded versions of existing programs. Several IIITs (particularly IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Kottayam) and NITs have been offering Cybersecurity or Information Security programs. In 2026, more institutes are adding seats and new institutes are launching these programs for the first time.
4
What is the career scope for Semiconductor Technology graduates?
Semiconductor graduates can work in chip design (Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, TSMC partners), semiconductor fabrication (Micron India, Tata Electronics), EDA tools, and academic research. With India building multiple chip fabs and design centres, the 5–10 year career outlook is extremely strong.
5
What is the career scope for Cybersecurity graduates?
Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing tech fields globally. Graduates can work in: (1) SOC (Security Operations Centre) roles, (2) Ethical hacking / penetration testing, (3) Government agencies (CERT-In, DRDO, NTRO), (4) Banking and financial services, (5) Big Tech security teams. Starting salaries are comparable to CSE.
6
Will Semiconductor and Cybersecurity programs have tough cutoffs?
It's mixed. At top IITs, these programs are expected to attract strong interest and may have competitive cutoffs. At newer IITs and NITs, initial cutoffs may be moderate as students are still evaluating these programs. Over time, as industry demand proves itself through placements, cutoffs are expected to rise.
