Among the four institute categories that make up JoSAA counselling, IIITs stand out in 2026 for growing both in absolute terms and proportionally faster than IITs, NITs, and GFTIs. This isn't a one-off blip — it reflects a multi-year trend where IIITs, particularly the newer Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model institutes established over the last decade, have moved from a setup-and-stabilization phase into active capacity expansion as their infrastructure, faculty strength, and industry partnerships have matured. Unlike IITs and NITs, whose total institute count has been relatively stable for years (aside from a handful of additions), the IIIT network has both added new institutes and expanded intake at existing ones simultaneously, which compounds into the sharper growth percentage seen this year.

For a JEE Main candidate building a choice list, this growth pattern has two practical implications worth separating clearly. First, more total seats generally means a slightly broader set of realistic options across the IIIT tier as a whole — useful if your rank sits in a range where IIIT admission wasn't previously a strong possibility.
