JoSAA 2026 Document Verification Process

Step-by-step guide to the documents, process, and common pitfalls in JoSAA's post-allotment verification

Why Document Verification Exists

After JoSAA allots you a seat, the institute and JoSAA need to confirm that your category, academic eligibility, identity, and quota claims (such as home state or PwD status) are genuine before the seat is finalized. This is done through document verification — a mandatory step between seat allotment and final admission that runs in every round of JoSAA, including the 2026 cycle which concluded with its final round result on July 16, 2026.

Skipping or delaying document verification within the stipulated window typically results in cancellation of your allotted seat, so it must be treated with the same urgency as choice locking.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Receive provisional allotment letter after a round's result. 2. Log in to the JoSAA portal and navigate to the document upload section. 3. Upload scanned copies of all required documents — scorecards, certificates, photographs — in the specified format and size. 4. Wait for verification status, which typically updates within the response window for that round. 5. Fix and re-upload any document flagged as rejected, promptly. 6. Complete choice locking (freeze/float/slide) alongside or after verification, per that round's instructions.

For the choice locking step itself, see our choice locking deadline guide. If you haven't yet filled your preferences, start with the JoSAA choice filling guide, and once your seat is confirmed, read what to do after JoSAA seat allotment.

Frequently Asked Questions – JoSAA 2026 Document Verification

Common questions about required documents and the verification process

1
Is JoSAA document verification done online or in person?
JoSAA has largely shifted to online document verification, where candidates upload scanned copies of required documents through the portal after each round's allotment, and the verification is done remotely by designated officials. Some categories or edge cases may still require verification at a physical reporting centre — check your specific allotment letter instructions for the current cycle, since this detail can change year to year.
2
What documents are typically required for JoSAA verification?
Commonly required documents include: JEE Main/Advanced admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates/mark sheets (for age and qualification proof), category certificate (for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS, issued within the validity period specified by JoSAA), PwD certificate if applicable, income certificate for EWS, state domicile/nativity certificate for home state quota claims, provisional seat allotment letter, and passport-size photographs. Exact requirements are listed in the JoSAA information bulletin for the year.
3
What happens if my documents get rejected during verification?
If a document is rejected — commonly due to being unclear, outdated, or not matching the format specified — you are usually given a limited window to re-upload a corrected version before the next round's processing begins. Repeated or uncorrected rejections can lead to cancellation of your seat allotment, so always address rejection notices immediately and carefully re-check the format and validity date requirements.
4
Does document verification happen every round or just once?
Document verification is generally required after your first allotment and then re-confirmed or carried forward in subsequent rounds if you float or slide to a new seat. If you freeze a seat, that round's verification is typically your final verification step before physical reporting to the institute.
5
Can I complete document verification if I'm using a provisional category certificate?
Policies vary, but JoSAA typically requires the category certificate to be valid as per the specific format and date window stated in that year's bulletin. A provisional or improperly dated certificate is a common rejection reason — apply for your category certificate well in advance of counselling season to avoid this issue.
6
Who do I contact if I face technical issues uploading documents?
JoSAA publishes helpline numbers and email contacts for technical support on the official josaa.nic.in portal and in the information bulletin. Reach out through those official channels rather than third-party sources if you face upload failures or verification queries.
