Anti-Ragging Helpline for Engineering Colleges

Ragging is illegal. Know the national helpline, the official complaint portal, and exactly what to do if it happens to you or someone you know.

National Anti-Ragging Helpline

Helpline number: 1800-180-5522 (toll-free, 24x7, available across India)

Official website: antiragging.in — for complaints, awareness resources, and helpline access

This helpline is run under the UGC's anti-ragging regulations and is meant to be used by any student, at any recognized college or university in India, including engineering colleges, IITs, and NITs.

What Counts as Ragging

Ragging covers any act by a senior or group of seniors that causes physical harm, psychological distress, humiliation, fear, or a sense of shame to a fresher or junior — this includes forced physical activities, verbal abuse, public humiliation, financial exploitation, or targeted online/social harassment. It doesn't matter whether it's framed as "tradition," "fun," or "bonding" — if it causes discomfort or harm to the recipient, it qualifies as ragging under the regulations.

Genuine, voluntary interactions like institute-organized orientation events, mentorship programs, or friendly introductions are not ragging and are a normal part of settling into campus life.

Anti-Ragging Helpline – FAQs

Common questions about the anti-ragging helpline and reporting process

1
What is the national anti-ragging helpline number?
The UGC's National Anti-Ragging Helpline number is 1800-180-5522 — a toll-free number that operates 24x7 and is meant to be used by any student across India facing ragging at any college or university, including engineering colleges, IITs, and NITs.
2
Is there a website to file an anti-ragging complaint?
Yes, antiragging.in is the official UGC-run website for anti-ragging awareness and complaints, where students and parents can also register complaints online in addition to calling the helpline number.
3
Is ragging illegal in India?
Yes. Ragging in any form — physical, verbal, psychological, or even online/social — is prohibited under UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, and can also attract criminal liability under applicable state anti-ragging laws and the Indian Penal Code depending on the severity of the act.
4
What counts as ragging?
Ragging includes any act by a senior student (or group) that causes physical or psychological harm, embarrassment, fear, or a sense of shame or torment to a fresher or junior student — whether it's forced physical tasks, verbal abuse, humiliation, financial exploitation, or online harassment. Normal, consensual interaction like friendly introductions or orientation activities organized by the institute is not ragging.
5
What should I do if I or someone I know is being ragged?
Report it immediately — you can call the national helpline (1800-180-5522), approach your institute's anti-ragging committee/squad, inform your hostel warden, or use the antiragging.in complaint portal. Every UGC-recognized institute is required to have an anti-ragging committee and a functioning grievance mechanism; don't assume you have to handle it alone or stay silent out of fear.
6
Will I face retaliation for reporting ragging?
Institutes are required to protect the identity and safety of complainants, and anti-ragging regulations are designed specifically to prevent retaliation. If you're worried about anonymity, the national helpline and antiragging.in portal are external to your institute and provide an additional layer of protection beyond the internal committee.
7
Do IITs and NITs have their own anti-ragging cells?
Yes, every IIT and NIT (like all UGC-recognized institutions) is required to maintain an anti-ragging committee and an anti-ragging squad on campus, along with visible helpline information typically displayed in hostels and campus notice boards. Your specific institute's student handbook will list the local committee's contact details alongside the national helpline.
