IIT First Year

IIT First Year – What to Expect: Hostel, Courses & Culture

Everything you need to know as an incoming IIT fresher — hostel life, academic structure, grading, clubs, fests and survival tips

IIT Hostel Life – What the First Week Looks Like

Your first week at IIT begins with orientation (induction programme), which typically runs for 3-7 days. You will be assigned a hostel room, receive your institute ID card, meet your faculty advisor, and attend sessions on academic rules, anti-ragging policy, and campus facilities.

All freshers at IITs are required to stay in the hostel during the first year. Hostel rooms are typically shared (double or triple occupancy for freshers). Each hostel has common areas, study rooms, TV rooms, and sports facilities. Mess food is available for all three meals — quality varies significantly between hostels and IITs.

IIT campuses are largely self-contained. At IIT Bombay (Powai), IIT Delhi (Hauz Khas), and IIT Madras (Adyar), you will find shops, ATMs, medical centres, sports complexes, swimming pools, and canteens within the campus. Many students rarely need to leave campus in the first month.

Academic Structure – Courses, Credits and Grading

IITs run on a semester system — two semesters per academic year (July-November and January-May). In the first year, you will take 8-10 courses across both semesters, totalling approximately 40-50 credits. The total credits required for graduation are typically 150-165 depending on the IIT and branch.

GradeGrade PointPerformance Level
AA10Outstanding
AB9Excellent
BB8Very Good
BC7Good
CC6Average
CD5Below Average
DD4Marginal Pass
F0Fail — must repeat

Your CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) is the weighted average of all grade points across all courses. A CPI of 8.0+ is considered good for placements, internships and research programmes. For branch change at top IITs, you need 9.0+ CPI.

Clubs, Fests and Extracurricular Life

IITs are famous for their vibrant extracurricular ecosystem. As a fresher, you will be invited to join numerous clubs and student bodies. Here is a snapshot of what awaits:

Technical Clubs

  • Robotics & Automation
  • Coding (IITB: WNCC)
  • Aerospace & Aero-modelling
  • Electronics & Circuits
  • Quizzing clubs

Cultural Clubs

  • Music (Western & Indian Classical)
  • Dance (Nukkad, Western, Classical)
  • Theatre & Drama
  • Fine Arts
  • Photography & Film

Major Fests

  • Mood Indigo (IITB) — Asia's largest cultural fest
  • Saarang (IITM) — cultural fest
  • Techfest (IITB) — Asia's largest science & tech fest
  • Shaastra (IITM) — technical fest
  • Kshitij (IITKGP)

Academic Clubs

  • Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell)
  • Finance & Investment clubs
  • Consulting clubs
  • Science & Mathematics olympiad clubs

Anti-Ragging Policy and Student Safety

All IITs maintain a strict zero-tolerance anti-ragging policy as mandated by the Supreme Court of India and UGC/AICTE guidelines. Every student must sign an anti-ragging declaration before joining. Hostels have resident wardens and student-elected representatives (General Secretaries) who are points of contact for any issues.

Physical ragging has been effectively eliminated from IIT campuses over the past decade. However, forms of informal senior-junior interaction (staying up late, performing tasks) still exist informally in some hostels. Students have the right to refuse any uncomfortable interaction and report it without fear.

Helpline: National Anti-Ragging Helpline — 1800-180-5522 (toll free, 24x7). Each IIT also has its own internal anti-ragging committee and dedicated email IDs for complaints. Do not hesitate to use these resources.

1
Do all IIT students get hostel accommodation in the first year?
Yes, all admitted students at IITs are guaranteed hostel accommodation for the first year. Freshers are assigned to specific freshers' hostels (sometimes called halls of residence). You cannot opt out of the hostel in the first year at most IITs — it is compulsory. Room type is typically double or triple occupancy for freshers, though this varies by IIT and hostel.
2
What courses do IIT first-year students take regardless of branch?
IIT first-year students take a common core curriculum regardless of their branch. Typical courses include Mathematics (Calculus, Linear Algebra), Physics, Chemistry, Introduction to Programming/Computing, Engineering Drawing/Design, and a Humanities/Social Sciences elective. These core courses ensure all engineers have a strong scientific foundation. Branch-specific courses typically start in the second year.
3
How does the CPI/SGPA grading system work at IITs?
IITs use a 10-point grading scale. Each course has a credit weight. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your weighted average for one semester. CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) is your overall average across all completed semesters. Grades are typically: AA (10), AB (9), BB (8), BC (7), CC (6), CD (5), DD (4), F (fail). The weightage for AA vs lower grades varies by IIT.
4
Is ragging a real problem at IITs?
IITs have a strict zero-tolerance policy on ragging. Physical ragging has been largely eliminated. However, some milder forms of informal 'senior-junior interaction' exist at certain hostels. All IITs have an anti-ragging committee, a dedicated helpline, and mandatory anti-ragging declarations. If you face any form of ragging, report it immediately to the hostel warden, anti-ragging committee, or the national helpline 1800-180-5522.
5
How do I balance branch change preparation with overall IIT life?
The key is structured time management. Allocate dedicated study hours (4-6 hours of focused study daily works for most students). Attend all lectures, tutorials, and labs — these directly contribute to your grade. Participate in at least one or two extracurricular activities for mental well-being and skill development. Avoid the trap of either studying 16 hours a day (burnout) or neglecting academics for activities (low CPI).
