Internship Comparison

Internship Experience – IIT vs NIT: How Different Is It?

Company tier, stipends, PPO rates, FAANG presence and strategies to maximize your internship regardless of college

Campus Internship Ecosystem – IIT vs NIT

The most significant difference between IIT and NIT internship experiences is in the on-campus recruitment infrastructure. IITs — particularly IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, and Kharagpur — attract 300-500 companies for summer internships. NITs attract fewer companies for internships compared to final placements, and the company tier distribution is different.

At IITs, the summer internship season (usually November-December for 3rd-year students) is a major event. Companies visit in Phases: Day 1 companies (Google, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, DE Shaw) arrive first and recruit the strongest students. Subsequent phases bring mid-tier and niche companies.

At Tier-1 NITs (NIT Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal), the internship ecosystem is competitive but more limited. Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Flipkart, and several good mid-tier companies visit for internships. Students who work hard on competitive programming and projects can access top companies through off-campus applications.

How to Maximize Internship Quality – For Both IIT and NIT Students

Master Competitive Programming

LeetCode, Codeforces, CodeChef — consistent practice on data structures and algorithms is the foundational requirement for SWE internships at top companies. Aim for LeetCode 200+ problems solved (medium/hard) before internship season. Target Codeforces rating of 1400+ for elite roles.

Build a Strong Project Portfolio

2-3 well-executed projects on GitHub, with clean code, README documentation, and ideally some users/stars. Full-stack web apps, ML/DL projects, system design projects, and open-source contributions all stand out. Quantify impact wherever possible ('processed 1M records', 'reduced latency by 40%').

Off-Campus Applications Start Early

Apply directly on company career portals 6-8 months before the internship start date. US companies (Google, Microsoft) open internship applications in August-October for next year's summer. Indian companies open in September-November. Do not wait for campus placement season if you have a strong profile.

Leverage Alumni Networks

Reach out to seniors from your college who are at your target companies. A warm referral dramatically improves your chances of getting an interview callback. LinkedIn is your tool — connect genuinely, not just for referrals. Alumni are generally happy to help juniors who show genuine effort.

1
Which companies visit IITs for summer internships that don't come to NITs?
Several elite companies — especially in finance, consulting, and FAANG — recruit exclusively or primarily at IITs for internships. These include Jane Street, D.E. Shaw (quant roles), Goldman Sachs (securities division), Google (highest stipend roles), and top management consulting firms. However, NIT Tier 1 (Trichy, Warangal) students can access many of these companies through off-campus applications and referrals, which is increasingly common.
2
What is the typical internship stipend at IITs vs NITs?
IIT intern stipends at top companies: Google/Microsoft/Goldman Sachs pay ₹1-1.5 lakh/month; mid-tier tech companies pay ₹60,000-90,000/month; startups pay ₹20,000-50,000/month. NIT Tier-1 intern stipends: top companies pay ₹50,000-80,000/month; mid-tier tech companies pay ₹30,000-50,000/month. The gap narrows significantly for similar company tiers — an Amazon intern from NIT Trichy earns roughly the same stipend as an Amazon intern from IIT Bombay.
3
What is a PPO (Pre-Placement Offer) and how common is it?
A PPO is a full-time job offer extended to an intern before the final placement season. It is based on your internship performance. At IITs, PPO conversion rates range from 40-70% at top companies. At NITs, PPO rates are similar within the companies that visit. Getting a good PPO eliminates placement season stress and gives you security. Always treat your internship as a 2-month interview — your work quality and team fit determine the PPO.
4
Can NIT students get FAANG internships?
Yes, absolutely. While Google, Meta, and Apple primarily recruit through on-campus channels at IITs, NIT students can and do get FAANG internships through off-campus applications. The key factors are: strong competitive programming performance (Codeforces, LeetCode, CodeChef), GitHub portfolio with strong open-source or project work, employee referrals from seniors already at these companies, and applying early via company career portals. Several hundred NIT students land FAANG internships every year through off-campus routes.
5
How do I maximize my internship quality regardless of college?
Focus on competitive programming from your 1st year — it is the single most powerful differentiator for SWE internships. Build a strong GitHub portfolio with 2-3 well-documented projects. Connect with seniors at target companies for referrals. Apply directly on company websites 6-9 months before the internship season. Participate in company-run challenges (Google Summer of Code, Microsoft Engage, Goldman Sachs Quantify). For non-SWE roles, develop domain skills (finance, ML, product) and apply via LinkedIn and direct portals.
