IIT Student Life – Academic Calendar, Clubs & Activities

Academic year structure, credit system, major fests, research programmes, E-Cell and how to balance academics with extracurriculars

Academic Calendar and Credit System

IIT B.Tech programmes run on two semesters per year. Classes begin in late July and Semester 1 ends in late November with examinations. Semester 2 runs from January to May with end-semester exams in April-May. Between semesters (May-July), students typically pursue internships, research projects, or summer courses.

PeriodActivityKey Events
July – NovemberSemester 1Orientation, club recruitments, mid-sem exams, fests (Mood Indigo, Antaragni)
November – DecemberSemester breakInternship season (for 3rd-years), campus rest
January – MaySemester 2Techfest, Shaastra, Kshitij, Saarang, end-sem exams
May – JulySummer breakInternships, research programmes (SURGE, UROP), vacation

The typical B.Tech programme requires 150-165 credits over 8 semesters. In each semester, you take 8-10 courses (a mix of core mandatory courses and free/open electives). Course loads are heavy — expect 45-60 hours per week of combined class time, lab work, assignments, and self-study in challenging semesters.

Research Opportunities at IITs

IITs offer exceptional undergraduate research opportunities that are crucial for MS/PhD aspirants. Key programmes:

SURGE (IIT Kanpur)

Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence. 8-week supervised research with a faculty mentor. Competitive selection with 100-150 seats. Stipend provided. Results in a written report and poster presentation. Highly regarded by US/European universities for MS/PhD applications.

UROP (IIT Bombay)

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme. Students work with faculty on ongoing research projects throughout the year. Can lead to co-authorship on papers. No fixed stipend but academic credit may be awarded for registered projects.

BTP (B.Tech Project)

Mandatory final-year project spanning two semesters (6-7th or 7th-8th). Choose a faculty advisor and work on an independent research or development project. BTP is the best opportunity for a strong LOR and potential publication.

International Research Internships

DAAD (Germany), Mitacs (Canada), S.N. Bose Scholars (USA), and NTU/NUS (Singapore) programmes accept IIT students for 2-3 month research internships abroad. These are highly competitive but extremely valuable for MS applications.

1
How many credits are required to graduate from IIT?
Credit requirements for IIT B.Tech graduation typically range from 150 to 165 credits depending on the IIT and the branch. A standard semester has 8-10 courses worth 3-4 credits each, totalling 24-30 credits per semester. Core courses are mandatory; elective courses allow you to customise your academic profile. Some branches (like Engineering Physics) have higher credit requirements due to additional core courses.
2
What are the major IIT fests and when do they happen?
Major IIT fests run from October to March. Mood Indigo (IIT Bombay) — Asia's largest college cultural festival — happens in December. Techfest (IIT Bombay) — Asia's largest science and technology festival — happens in January. Saarang (IIT Madras) — large cultural fest — happens in January. Shaastra (IIT Madras) — technical fest — happens in January. Kshitij (IIT Kharagpur) — technical fest — happens in January-February. Antaragni (IIT Kanpur) — cultural fest — in October.
3
What is the SURGE and UROP programme at IITs?
SURGE (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship) at IIT Kanpur is a competitive programme that allows students to conduct supervised research over summer. Students work with a faculty mentor on a defined research project and present their findings. IIT Bombay has UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme) which is similar. These programmes give students their first research experience and are valuable for MS/PhD applications abroad.
4
How do IIT E-Cells and entrepreneurship programmes work?
Every IIT has an Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) — a student-run body that promotes startup culture. E-Cells organise events like E-Summit (annual flagship), startup competitions, speaker sessions with founders/investors, and run incubation support for student startups. IIT Bombay's SINE (Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) and IIT Delhi's FITT are formal incubators that provide office space, mentorship, and seed funding to student/alumni startups.
5
How do I balance academics and extracurriculars at IIT without hurting CPI?
The key is early prioritization. In your 1st year, sample multiple clubs but commit to 1-2 that genuinely interest you. Set a minimum CPI target (e.g., 7.5 for decent placements, 8.5 for good internships, 9.0+ for branch change). If your CPI drops below target, temporarily reduce extracurricular commitments. Most successful IIT students are involved in 1-2 clubs seriously while maintaining 8.0+ CPI — spreading too thin hurts both academics and extracurricular quality.
