MS Abroad

MS Abroad After IIT – How to Get Into MIT, Stanford, CMU

CGPA requirements, GRE, SOP tips, top universities, funding options and F-1 visa process for IIT graduates

Why IIT Brand Matters for MS Abroad

IIT graduates have one of the strongest international reputations among Indian engineering universities. Top US and European universities receive thousands of applications from India every year, and IIT names on a transcript immediately signal strong mathematical ability, rigorous technical training, and competitive selection at the undergraduate level.

Many IIT alumni hold faculty positions at top global universities, creating strong informal networks and LOR pipelines. Professors at MIT, Stanford, CMU, Cornell, UIUC, and Georgia Tech often have IIT connections, which can translate to warmer reads of IIT applicants' profiles.

That said, IIT brand alone is not sufficient. Research experience, publications, strong LORs, a compelling SOP, and relevant internships are equally important — especially for competitive MS/PhD programmes in AI, ML, systems, and theoretical CS.

CPI requirements are indicative. Actual admits depend on research fit, LORs, SOP quality and research experience. Check university websites for latest requirements.

MS Application Components – What Matters Most

Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Very High

Your SOP must clearly articulate your research interests, why you are applying to this specific programme/professor, and your long-term goals. Avoid generic statements. Mention specific professors, their research, and how it connects to your own work. 800-1000 words, no fluff.

Letters of Recommendation (LORs)

Very High

3 LORs are typically required. Ideal combination: 2 academic (professors who supervised your projects or thesis) + 1 industry mentor. Strong LORs from internationally-known professors carry significantly more weight. Start cultivating relationships with faculty from your 2nd year onwards.

Research Experience

High

Publications (even workshop papers or pre-prints) dramatically improve admits to top schools. Research internships at IISc, IITs, or international universities (DAAD, Mitacs, SN Bose) are highly valued. Even a well-executed B.Tech project under a strong professor is valuable.

CGPA/Grades

Medium-High

A CPI of 8.0+ is generally expected. Below 7.5 CPI significantly hurts admits to top programmes. Strong research experience can compensate for a slightly lower CGPA in some cases, but not systematically.

TOEFL / IELTS

Medium

TOEFL 100+ (iBT) or IELTS 7.0+ is typically required for international students. Most IIT graduates comfortably clear this. Aim for 105+ TOEFL to be competitive at top schools.

F-1 Student Visa Process

After receiving your I-20 form from the university, you can apply for the F-1 student visa at the nearest US consulate. Key steps: pay SEVIS fee ($350), fill DS-160 form online, schedule visa interview, prepare financial documents (proof of funds for tuition + living expenses), and attend the interview.

Interview tips: Be clear about your programme, university, and career goals. Bring all documents (I-20, admission letter, financial statements, academic transcripts, bank statements). F-1 visa is typically issued for the duration of study. Processing time is 1-3 weeks after the interview, so apply well in advance (at least 3-4 months before programme start date).

1
What CGPA do I need for MS in Computer Science at MIT or Stanford?
MIT EECS and Stanford CS are among the most competitive MS/PhD programmes globally. MIT EECS is primarily a PhD programme. For competitive admits, IITians typically need a CPI of 9.0+ (10-scale), strong research experience (at least one publication or a paper under review helps enormously), 3 strong LORs from well-known faculty, and a compelling SOP. Stanford MS CS (non-thesis) is slightly more accessible but still requires CPI 8.5+ and a strong profile overall.
2
Is GRE still required for MS admissions at top US universities?
As of 2025-2026, many top US universities have made GRE optional or permanently waived it for MS applicants. Schools like MIT, Stanford, CMU, UC Berkeley, and Cornell no longer require GRE for most programmes. However, for universities where GRE is optional, submitting a strong score (320+ out of 340) can strengthen your application. Always check the specific programme's current requirements, as policies continue to evolve.
3
How much does MS in CS cost at top US universities and is funding available?
MS CS tuition at top US universities costs $40,000-$80,000 per year. However, strong candidates can obtain funding through Teaching Assistantships (TAs) or Research Assistantships (RAs), which typically cover full tuition plus a monthly stipend of $2,000-3,500. PhD programmes almost always come with full funding. For self-funded MS, education loans of ₹40-60 lakh from Indian banks (SBI, HDFC, Axis) are commonly used.
4
When should I apply for MS abroad and what is the timeline?
For September (Fall) intake — the primary intake — applications open in September and deadlines fall between December 1 and January 15. Results are typically declared between February and April. For January (Spring) intake (available at fewer universities), applications close in August-September. Start preparing your SOP, securing LORs, and taking TOEFL/IELTS from the summer of your final year (6-8 months before application deadlines).
5
What makes IITians competitive for MS abroad admissions?
IIT brand carries significant weight in US/UK university admissions. Admissions committees at top schools are familiar with IIT's competitive entrance and rigorous curriculum. IITians are generally competitive in technical coursework, which is why IIT transcripts are well-regarded. Research papers, projects, strong LORs from internationally-known faculty, internships at top companies, and a compelling research narrative in the SOP further differentiate IIT applicants.
