IIT Branch Change

Branch Change at IIT – Rules, CGPA Needed & Success Rate

Everything about changing your branch at IIT after 1st year — CGPA cutoffs, process, seats, and realistic expectations

How Branch Change Works at IITs

Branch change (also called "change of programme" at some IITs) allows students to switch their academic programme after completing the first year. The process is entirely merit-based — students with the highest CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) get their preferred branches first, subject to seat availability.

The key eligibility criteria across most IITs are: (1) Clear all first-year courses — no backlogs or arrears, (2) Achieve a CPI above the institute's minimum threshold (usually 7.0-8.0), and (3) No pending disciplinary action. The actual cutoff CPI for popular branches like CSE, Electrical, and Mechanical is much higher than the minimum threshold.

Seats available for branch change are capped at 10-15% of the target branch's intake strength. These seats are filled purely on merit order. If you are ranked 1st among all applicants for a branch and seats exist, you will get the change. If seats are exhausted before your rank, you stay in your original branch.

IIT-wise CGPA Cutoffs for Popular Branch Changes

These are approximate CPI cutoffs based on recent years. They vary each year based on applicant pool and available seats. Treat these as indicative benchmarks, not guarantees.

Step-by-Step Branch Change Process at IITs

1

Complete First Year Successfully

Attend all courses, write all examinations, and ensure you have no arrears (failed/incomplete courses). Most IITs require a clean first-year record.

2

Wait for End-of-Year CPI Declaration

After May/June examinations, your CPI is declared. This CPI is used for branch change eligibility ranking. July results are typically final.

3

Apply on the Academic Portal

Most IITs open an online application window in July-August. Fill in your desired programme preferences in order. Submit the application before the deadline.

4

Merit List Preparation

The academic office prepares a merit list of all eligible applicants for each target branch. Students are ranked by CPI in descending order.

5

Allotment and Confirmation

Seats are allotted in merit order. Successful candidates receive confirmation and must accept by a given date. The new programme starts from Semester 3 (second year).

Realistic Success Rate & Tips for Aspirants

Branch change at IITs is extremely competitive, especially for CSE. At IIT Bombay, for instance, only 6-9 seats may be available in CSE for branch change, while 50+ students with CPI above 9.0 may apply. This means even a CPI of 9.3 may not be sufficient in some years.

Tips to maximize your chances:

  • Target a CPI above 9.5 if you want CSE at top IITs. Anything below 9.0 is unlikely to succeed for CSE at IIT B/D/M/K.
  • Attend all tutorials, labs, and quizzes — these contribute significantly to your overall grade at IITs.
  • Focus on the first semester heavily — a poor first semester is hard to recover from for branch change purposes.
  • Keep a backup plan — develop skills, take electives, and pursue internships in your desired field even if the branch change does not materialize.
  • Consider intermediate targets — if CSE is not achievable, Electrical Engineering (EE) or Engineering Physics may be more realistic stepping stones.
1
What CGPA do I need for branch change at IIT Bombay to CSE?
IIT Bombay CSE is the most competitive branch change target. You typically need a CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) of 9.5 or above after your first year. In recent years, the cutoff has been as high as 9.7-9.8 due to intense competition. Even with a 9.5 CPI, admission is not guaranteed — it depends on the number of applicants and available seats (10-15% of CSE intake).
2
How many seats are available for branch change at IITs?
IITs typically allow up to 10-15% of the target branch's total intake for branch change. For example, if a branch has 60 seats, 6-9 seats may be available for branch change. However, the actual number depends on IIT policy and year. Some years, seats may be zero if the branch is heavily oversubscribed. IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur tend to be slightly more liberal with branch change seats.
3
When does the branch change process happen at IITs?
Branch change applications are typically accepted in July-August, after the first-year academic results are declared. The process usually takes 2-3 weeks. Students submit applications online through the institute's academic portal, rankings are prepared based on CPI, and allocations are made in merit order. The new branch starts from the second year (3rd semester).
4
Are there conditions other than CGPA for IIT branch change?
Yes. Most IITs require: (1) no backlog (all first-year courses must be cleared without any arrears), (2) minimum CGPA threshold (varies by IIT, usually 7.0-7.5 as a floor), (3) no disciplinary action. Additionally, you cannot apply if your desired branch has fewer total registered students than a minimum threshold. Some IITs also restrict branch change for certain specialized or low-intake programs.
5
Is branch change at IIT worth the effort?
It depends on your goals. If you have strong career aspirations tied to the target branch (e.g., software/AI for CSE), achieving a high CPI to qualify is worth the focus. However, many students who study hard enough for branch change CGPAs end up doing well in placements and internships from their original branch too. The key insight: the effort you put into academics for branch change eligibility benefits you regardless of whether you get the change.
