NIT Branch Change

Branch Change at NIT – Is It Possible? How Does It Work?

Branch Change at NITs – The Basic Framework

Unlike IITs, branch change policies at NITs are not standardised across institutions. Each NIT has its own academic regulations, and these can change from year to year. Some NITs have a well-established branch change policy while others do not permit it at all.

Where branch change is permitted, the common eligibility criteria are: (1) complete all first-year courses without any backlog, (2) achieve a CGPA in the top 1-5% of your batch (not just a fixed number), and (3) no disciplinary issues. The top 1-5% criterion means that if the top student in your batch has 9.8 CGPA and you have 9.6, you might still not qualify if the cutoff falls at 9.7.

This percentage-based approach makes NIT branch change even more unpredictable than IIT branch change, because your eligibility depends on how your entire batch performs, not just your absolute CGPA.

Application Process and Timeline

Timeline: Branch change applications at NITs typically open in July-August after first-year results are declared. The entire process — application, merit list, allotment, confirmation — usually completes within 3-4 weeks before the second year begins.

Application: Students apply online through the institute academic portal or sometimes offline through the academic section. You select your desired branch(es) in preference order.

Merit List: The academic office prepares a combined merit list of all eligible applicants for each target branch, ranked by CGPA. Seats are filled in strict merit order.

Seats Available: NITs typically cap branch change seats at 5-10% of the target branch's intake. A 60-seat CSE branch may have only 3-6 seats for change. Some NITs cap it even lower at 2-3 seats per branch.

Confirmation: Selected candidates must confirm acceptance within 48-72 hours. Declining a branch change offer after acceptance is generally not permitted and may have academic consequences.

Alternatives to Branch Change at NITs

If branch change does not work out, several paths let you pursue your interests:

Minor Programme

Many NITs offer minor specialisations (e.g., CSE minor for ECE students). You take additional courses from your preferred branch and earn a minor degree alongside your major.

Elective Courses

Use your free electives to take courses in your desired field. A Mechanical student interested in software can take programming, algorithms, and ML electives.

M.Tech via GATE

Pursue a different specialisation at the postgraduate level through GATE. An ECE student can do M.Tech in Computer Science at IITs/NITs after B.Tech.

Dual Degree (Some NITs)

Some NITs offer integrated dual degree programmes. Check if your NIT allows switching to a dual degree option in a preferred branch.

1
Which NITs allow branch change after first year?
Major NITs that allow branch change include NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal (Karnataka), NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, NIT Allahabad, NIT Nagpur, and NIT Jaipur. Some newer NITs and smaller NITs do not have a formal branch change policy. Always check your specific NIT's academic regulations or contact the academic section before planning for branch change.
2
What CGPA is required for branch change at NIT Trichy?
NIT Trichy typically requires a CGPA of 9.0 or above after the first year for branch change to CSE. The exact cutoff varies each year based on applicant pool. For other branches like ECE, you might need 8.5+, and for Mechanical or Civil you may need 8.0+. Additionally, you must have no backlogs and be within the top 1-5% of your batch.
3
How many seats are available for branch change at NITs?
NITs generally allow 5-10% of the target branch's intake for branch change. For a branch with 60 seats, this means 3-6 seats may be available. In some NITs, the number is even lower — 2-3 seats per branch. The scarcity of seats makes branch change highly competitive even when your CGPA is strong.
4
Is there an alternative to branch change at NITs?
Yes — lateral entry (direct entry to 2nd year of a different B.Tech programme) is offered at some NITs for diploma holders or students who appeared for state-level lateral entry exams. Another alternative is to pursue your interests through electives, minor programmes, or dual degree options offered at some NITs. You can also pursue a different specialisation at the postgraduate (M.Tech) level through GATE.
5
Does branch change affect scholarship eligibility?
Generally, branch change does not directly affect scholarship eligibility. However, your new branch's batch rank may affect merit-based scholarships tied to branch performance. CSSS, AICTE, and state scholarships are typically based on income criteria and are unaffected. Institute merit scholarships might be recalculated from your second year based on your new branch's CPI ranking.
