IIT Roorkee as 2026 Organising Institute

As the organising institute for JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee was responsible for: setting up the registration portal, publishing the official Information Brochure, managing exam centre allocation across 280+ cities in India and international centres, preparing and maintaining question papers, conducting the CBT exam on May 17, 2026, processing answer key challenges, and declaring the result on June 1, 2026.

IIT Roorkee is one of India's oldest technical institutes (established 1847) and one of the original IITs. Its administrative capacity makes it well-suited to handle the logistics of an exam taken by over 1.7 lakh candidates simultaneously across hundreds of cities.

Role of Joint Admission Board (JAB)

The Joint Admission Board comprises directors of all 23 IITs and sets the policies for JEE Advanced. JAB decides eligibility criteria, number of seats, reservation policies, and counselling rules. The conducting IIT implements JAB's decisions. For queries about JEE Advanced policy (not exam conduct), JAB is the ultimate authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Advanced administration

1
Why does the conducting IIT for JEE Advanced rotate every year?
The rotation ensures that no single IIT bears the administrative burden of conducting JEE Advanced year after year. It also distributes responsibilities, resources, and expertise across the IIT system. The 7 zonal IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati) take turns on a rotation basis.
2
Does the conducting IIT affect the difficulty of JEE Advanced?
The question paper difficulty is set by a joint paper-setting committee from multiple IITs, not just the conducting IIT. So the conducting IIT does not significantly influence question difficulty. However, some years historically associated with certain IITs have had notable paper difficulty — this is coincidence rather than policy.
3
Who is responsible for JEE Advanced result and cutoffs?
The conducting IIT (IIT Roorkee for 2026) is responsible for the entire process: registration, question paper, exam conduct, answer key, result, and score card. The Joint Admission Board (JAB), which comprises directors of all IITs, oversees the overall policy and admission process.
4
Which IIT will conduct JEE Advanced 2027?
The organizing IIT for JEE Advanced 2027 had not been officially announced as of this writing. It is decided by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) on a rotation basis among the 7 zonal IITs, typically announced several months before the exam. Check jeeadv.ac.in for the official confirmation once released.
5
Is NTA involved in JEE Advanced?
No. NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts JEE Main but has no role in JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is fully managed by the IIT system through the conducting IIT and the Joint Admission Board (JAB). This is why JEE Advanced has its own website (jeeadv.ac.in) separate from NTA's portal.
