JEE Advanced College Predictor Category-Wise 2026

Predict your IIT and branch using your General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD category rank

Why Category Matters in IIT Seat Prediction

JoSAA allots IIT seats through category-specific rank lists, not a single merit order. Seats are divided as roughly General/Open (unreserved) 50.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, SC 15%, and ST 7.5% of the total intake, with a further horizontal reservation for PwD candidates across all categories. This means two candidates with identical CRL can land very different institutes if one of them qualifies under a reserved category rank list.

A category-wise predictor compares your category rank against each category's own opening and closing ranks for every institute-branch combination, instead of using a single General cutoff for everyone. This is the only way to get a realistic prediction if you belong to EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD.

How to Use the Category-Wise Predictor

Open our JEE Advanced College Predictor, enter your JEE Advanced rank and select your category (General/EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST) along with gender and PwD status if applicable. The tool matches your category rank against historical opening-closing ranks for every IIT-branch combination and returns a ranked list of institutes you have a realistic chance at.

For branch-specific predictions after narrowing by category, check CSE predictions or ECE predictions. Once you have a shortlist, plan your choice order using our JoSAA choice filling guide.

Frequently Asked Questions – Category-Wise JEE Advanced Predictor

Common questions about category-wise IIT seat prediction

1
Does the JEE Advanced college predictor need category rank or CRL rank?
You need your Category Rank (CRL for General, and the respective category rank for EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST) as declared in your JEE Advanced scorecard. Our predictor tool accepts both your CRL and category rank, since IIT seat allotment uses category rank lists for reserved seats and CRL for General/Open seats.
2
Why do OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates get seats at much higher CRL numbers?
Reservation works on a parallel rank list, not a discount on the General list. An OBC-NCL candidate with category rank 500 might have a CRL of 8,000 — their seat is allotted based on category rank against OBC-NCL reserved seats (27% of total), so they can access institutes that a General candidate with a similar CRL cannot.
3
Can an SC/ST or OBC-NCL candidate also compete for General (Open) seats?
Yes. Every category candidate can compete for Open category seats using their CRL, in addition to their own reserved category seats. The seat allotted is whichever gives the better (more preferred) outcome based on choice order — candidates are never restricted to only their reserved quota.
4
How accurate is a category-wise predictor compared to last year's cutoffs?
Category-wise predictors use previous years' opening and closing ranks for each category at each institute-branch combination. Accuracy is generally high (within a few hundred ranks) for stable branches, but can shift for new IITs or branches with small reserved-seat intake where even a handful of applicants change the cutoff noticeably.
5
Does EWS have a separate rank list from General?
Yes. EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates get a separate category rank list, and 10% of seats are reserved for EWS. EWS closing ranks are usually between General and OBC-NCL closing ranks for the same institute-branch.
