JEE Advanced 2027 Cutoff Marks Explained

JEE Advanced cutoff marks are not pre-decided before the exam. They are computed after the exam is conducted and evaluated, based on how the candidate pool actually performed that year against that year's specific paper. This is a deliberate design choice — it lets the exam adapt the qualifying bar to each year's difficulty level, rather than locking in a fixed number that might be unreasonably easy or hard depending on how tough the paper turns out to be.

Because of this, cutoff marks have moved up and down across different years rather than following a steady trend in one direction. The stable element is the structure, not the number: a General aggregate-plus-subject-wise minimum, with other categories calculated as a percentage of it.

The single most common confusion among aspirants is treating the qualifying cutoff as the target score for an IIT seat. In reality:

Qualifying cutoff only determines whether a candidate is assigned an All India Rank at all. It is set relatively low because its purpose is simply to filter out candidates who clearly haven't demonstrated minimum competence — not to decide who gets into an IIT.

IIT branch admission through JoSAA depends on rank, not raw marks, and popular branches at well-known IITs close at ranks that typically correspond to scores multiple times higher than the bare qualifying cutoff. A candidate can clear the qualifying cutoff comfortably and still not get a seat in their preferred branch or IIT if their overall rank isn't competitive enough.
