JEE Advanced 2027 Category-wise Cutoff Explained

No JEE Advanced 2027 cutoff numbers exist yet. Here's how the category-wise cutoff mechanism works and what to expect once the 2027 result is out.

JEE Advanced 2027 Has Not Happened Yet

No exam has been conducted, so no category-wise cutoff marks exist for 2027. This page explains the stable mechanism used to set these cutoffs every year — exact 2027 figures will be confirmed only once the result is declared.

The Category-wise Cutoff Mechanism

Every year, JEE Advanced first establishes a General category qualifying cutoff — a minimum aggregate mark (out of the total paper marks) plus a minimum mark in each individual subject, both based on that year's specific paper difficulty and candidate performance. This General cutoff is the anchor from which every other category's cutoff is derived.

Other categories are not assigned arbitrary cutoffs — they are calculated as a fixed proportion of the General cutoff. Historically, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates have needed approximately 90% of the General aggregate and per-subject marks, while SC, ST, and PwD candidates have needed approximately 50% of the General aggregate and per-subject marks. This proportional relationship, not the absolute numbers, is what has remained consistent year to year.

Because this is a percentage-based rule rather than a fixed number, the exact marks required change every year along with the General cutoff, but the relative gap between categories tends to stay roughly similar. This is the key distinction aspirants should understand: the mechanism is stable, the numbers are not.

Two Separate Cutoff Conditions

Aggregate Minimum

A minimum total score across both papers combined, scaled per category as a percentage of the General aggregate cutoff.

Subject-wise Minimum

A minimum score in each individual subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics), also scaled per category. Both conditions must be met simultaneously to receive a rank.

JEE Advanced 2027 Category-wise Cutoff – FAQs

Common questions about how category-wise cutoffs work for JEE Advanced 2027

1
Are JEE Advanced 2027 category-wise cutoff numbers available yet?
No. JEE Advanced 2027 has not been conducted, so no category-wise cutoff marks exist for it yet. This page explains the mechanism used to set category-wise cutoffs every year, not a confirmed number for 2027. Exact 2027 figures will be published once the result is declared.
2
How is the category-wise cutoff structured in JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced sets a General category qualifying cutoff (a minimum aggregate mark plus a minimum per-subject mark) each year based on that year's paper and candidate performance. Other categories — OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD — then get a cutoff calculated as a fixed percentage of the General cutoff: historically OBC-NCL and EWS at around 90% of the General mark, and SC, ST, and PwD at around 50% of the General mark, both for the aggregate and for each subject.
3
Why don't all categories have the same cutoff marks?
The percentage-of-General structure exists to implement reservation policy at the exam-qualification stage itself, not just at seat allotment — it ensures candidates from reserved categories can qualify for a JEE Advanced rank at a comparatively lower score while still being evaluated under the same exam and marking scheme as everyone else. This proportional-reduction mechanism has stayed structurally the same for years, even though the absolute cutoff numbers move up or down with paper difficulty.
4
Does a lower category cutoff mean an easier IIT admission?
No — qualifying cutoff and IIT admission are two different things. Qualifying cutoff only determines whether a candidate receives a JEE Advanced rank at all. Actual IIT branch admission through JoSAA depends on the candidate's rank within their category's merit list and how many reserved seats are available in that branch — which typically requires a score well above the qualifying cutoff for popular branches and IITs.
5
Will the category-wise cutoff mechanism change for JEE Advanced 2027?
The underlying mechanism (General cutoff plus percentage-based cutoffs for other categories) has remained stable for years and is expected to continue for 2027, since it reflects a durable reservation-policy structure rather than a year-specific choice. However, any change would be confirmed only in the official JEE Advanced 2027 information bulletin.
6
Where will the JEE Advanced 2027 category-wise cutoff be published?
It will be published on the official JEE Advanced website along with the result, typically on the same day as the All India Rank declaration. Until then, any category-wise number for 2027 circulating online should be treated as speculation, not an official figure.
