JEE Advanced 2026 Category-wise Qualifying Cutoff Marks

General ~85 aggregate · OBC-NCL/EWS ~76 · SC/ST/PwD ~43 · Subject-wise minimum required in each subject

Two Types of JEE Advanced Cutoffs

Qualifying Cutoff

Minimum marks needed to receive a JEE Advanced rank. This is category-wise and has both an aggregate minimum AND a per-subject minimum. Scoring above this ensures you receive an AIR.

JoSAA Allotment Cutoff

The rank at which specific IIT branches close during JoSAA rounds. Significantly stricter than qualifying cutoff. IIT Bombay CSE closes at rank ~67 (requires ~290–310 marks).

Category-wise Qualifying Cutoff (2025 vs 2026 Estimate)

Qualifying vs IIT Admission – The Gap Explained

Many candidates confuse the qualifying cutoff with the marks needed for IIT admission. These are vastly different:

Qualifying cutoff (General): ~85–94 marks — This only ensures you receive a rank and appear in the merit list. At this score, you may get a rank of 40,000–50,000+, which gives access to newer IITs (like IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati) in non-popular branches.

IIT Bombay CSE: requires ~290–310 marks (rank ~67) — Over 3x the qualifying cutoff. IIT Kanpur CSE: ~250–270 marks (rank ~198). IIT Guwahati CSE: ~195–215 marks (rank ~1,500).

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Advanced Category Cutoff

Common questions about JEE Advanced 2026 category-wise qualifying cutoff marks and subject-wise minimums

1
What is the JEE Advanced 2026 qualifying cutoff for General category?
Based on 2025 data and typical trends, the General category qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2026 is approximately 85 marks (aggregate out of 360) with a minimum of ~10 marks per subject. In 2025, the actual cutoff was 94 marks aggregate for General category. Note: qualifying cutoff means getting a rank; it does NOT mean you can get into a good IIT branch at this score.
2
What are the minimum subject-wise marks required in JEE Advanced 2026?
Candidates must score a minimum in EACH individual subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) AND meet the aggregate cutoff. For 2025: General category needed ~10 marks per subject; OBC-NCL/EWS needed ~9 marks per subject; SC/ST/PwD needed ~5 marks per subject. Both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously to receive a rank.
3
What is the difference between JEE Advanced qualifying cutoff and JoSAA allotment cutoff?
JEE Advanced qualifying cutoff is the minimum aggregate marks + subject-wise marks needed to receive a rank (be listed in the merit list). JoSAA allotment cutoff is the rank at which specific IIT branches fill up during counselling. For example, qualifying requires ~85–94 marks (General), but IIT Bombay CSE fills by rank ~67, requiring approximately 290–310 marks.
4
Does EWS category get a lower cutoff in JEE Advanced 2026?
Yes. EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates have a lower qualifying cutoff similar to OBC-NCL. In 2025, EWS cutoff was 84 marks (aggregate), same as OBC-NCL. The EWS category was introduced under the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections among General category candidates. A valid EWS certificate is mandatory.
5
How does category rank differ from All India Rank in JEE Advanced?
All India Rank (AIR) is the overall rank of a candidate across all categories combined (CRL – Common Rank List). Category rank (e.g., OBC-NCL rank, SC rank, ST rank) is the rank within that specific category's merit list. For JoSAA counselling, both ranks matter: OBC-NCL candidates can compete for both General and OBC-NCL seats, and the best rank applies.
