JEE Advanced 2026 General Cutoff – OPEN Category Qualifying Marks

Minimum marks to qualify JEE Advanced 2026 as General/OPEN candidate — aggregate and subject-wise thresholds

JEE Advanced 2026 General Qualifying Cutoff: What You Need to Know

The General (OPEN) category qualifying cutoff is the benchmark for getting ranked in the JEE Advanced CRL (Common Rank List). JEE Advanced 2026 result was declared June 1, 2026 with 56,880 candidates qualifying; based on the trend from 2025 (where the cutoff was approximately 90 marks out of 360), the 2026 cutoff is in a similar range — approximately 25% of total marks in aggregate. Verify the exact figure at jeeadv.ac.in.

The subject-wise minimum adds another layer: you must score at least a threshold in each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics across both papers. In 2025, this was approximately 10 marks per subject (combined across both papers). Failing the subject-wise minimum disqualifies you even if your aggregate is above the threshold.

Approximately 17,000-18,000 candidates qualify JEE Advanced across all categories. The top ~17,500 are ranked in the CRL list, covering all categories. However, only ~17,000 IIT seats exist, making it important to note that qualifying does not guarantee an IIT seat in all years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Advanced 2026 General/OPEN category cutoff

1
What is the JEE Advanced 2026 General category qualifying cutoff?
Based on JEE Advanced 2025 data, the General/OPEN category qualifying cutoff is approximately 90 marks in aggregate out of 360 (25% of total marks). Additionally, there is a subject-wise minimum of approximately 10 marks per subject across both papers combined (approximately 5 marks per paper per subject). These thresholds are set by the JEE Advanced committee and announced with the official result.
2
How many General category students qualify JEE Advanced each year?
Approximately 6,000-8,000 General category students qualify JEE Advanced annually and are placed in the CRL rank list in the OPEN category. This does not include OBC/SC/ST/EWS qualifiers who may also appear in the General merit list if their marks cross the General threshold. Total qualifiers across all categories: approximately 17,000-18,000.
3
What happens if I cross the General cutoff but do not get an IIT seat?
If you qualify JEE Advanced (cross the General cutoff) but do not get an IIT through JoSAA, you are still considered qualified. This qualification is valid only for the current year's JoSAA counselling — it does not carry forward. You can use your JEE Main rank for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission through JoSAA in the same cycle.
4
Is the JEE Advanced General cutoff based on percentage or absolute marks?
The General cutoff is based on absolute marks but with a percentage-based floor. The rule is: you must score at least a certain absolute mark in aggregate, AND at least 10% (approximately) in each subject. In 2025, the aggregate was approximately 90 marks (25% of 360) with subject-wise minima of approximately 10 marks per subject.
5
Does the JEE Advanced 2026 General cutoff change based on paper difficulty?
Yes. In tough paper years, the cutoff drops; in easier papers, it rises. The committee maintains roughly 25% aggregate for General — so in a hard paper where average scores are low, the absolute cutoff mark decreases. In 2021 (COVID year, easier papers), the cutoff was slightly higher. In 2023 (harder paper), it was slightly lower.
