CSAB Special Round 2026 – Vacant Seats & Eligibility

CSAB Special Rounds fill 8,000–12,000+ seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that remain vacant after JoSAA Round 6. Find out which institutes have seats and whether CSAB is worth it for your rank.

What Happens in CSAB Special Round?

After JoSAA Round 6 concludes, a significant number of seats remain unfilled — either because candidates rejected allotments, withdrew, or certain institutes/branches had insufficient demand. CSAB Special Rounds SR1 and SR2 are designed specifically to fill these vacancies.

In 2025, approximately 8,000–12,000 seats across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs went through CSAB special rounds. The majority of these came from GFTIs and newer NITs, particularly those in North-Eastern states.

SR1 vs SR2 – Seat Differences

  • SR1: All seats vacant after JoSAA Round 6. Largest pool. Best chance of getting a preferred option.
  • SR2: Seats remaining after SR1 (not accepted or new vacancies). Smaller pool, fewer top options.
  • NEUT Round: Only for NE state / UT candidates. Often more seats relative to eligible candidates.

CSAB Cutoff vs JoSAA Cutoff

CSAB closing ranks tend to be 5–15% more relaxed than JoSAA Round 6 for the same institute/branch. This is because:

  • Most top-rank candidates are already placed in JoSAA
  • Some candidates do not register for CSAB at all
  • Total eligible candidate pool is smaller in CSAB

Example: If JoSAA Round 6 closed NIT Meghalaya CSE at rank 28,000, CSAB SR1 might close at 30,000–33,000.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB Special Round 2026

Common questions about CSAB 2026 special round seats, cutoffs, and eligibility

1
Which seats are available in CSAB Special Round 2026?
CSAB Special Round 2026 will include seats that remained unfilled after all 6 JoSAA rounds. These are typically in newer or remote NITs (NE states, Sikkim, Uttarakhand), less-popular branches at mid-tier NITs, and most GFTIs across India. Top-tier NITs like Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal rarely have CSAB vacancies in popular branches.
2
How many seats are available in CSAB Special Round?
In 2025, approximately 8,000–12,000 seats went through CSAB special rounds across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The exact number for 2026 depends on JoSAA Round 6 outcomes. GFTIs typically contribute the majority of CSAB vacancies.
3
Is CSAB Special Round worth trying for my rank?
CSAB is worth it if: (1) You didn't get any JoSAA seat OR got a less-preferred seat you want to upgrade; (2) Your rank is in the range where newer NITs or GFTIs are achievable; (3) You're from a NE state and the CSAB NEUT round applies to you. CSAB cutoffs are generally 5–15% more relaxed than JoSAA Round 6.
4
What is the CSAB special round cutoff vs JoSAA cutoff?
CSAB special round closing ranks are typically slightly higher (more relaxed) than JoSAA Round 6 closing ranks for the same institute and branch. This is because the competition is lower — most top rankers are already placed in JoSAA. Historically the difference has been 5–20% higher CRL allowed in CSAB.
5
Can I upgrade my seat from JoSAA allotment through CSAB?
If you accepted a JoSAA seat and reported to an institute (Final/Freeze), you are NOT eligible for CSAB. However, if you received a JoSAA allotment but withdrew before the final reporting date, you can participate in CSAB to try for a better option. You cannot hold two central counselling seats at the same time.
