CSAB 2026 vs UPTAC – Are They the Same?

No — CSAB is national counselling for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, while UPTAC is Uttar Pradesh's own state counselling for AKTU-affiliated colleges.

Two Separate Counselling Systems

Many JEE Main aspirants from Uttar Pradesh, or those considering UP colleges, ask whether CSAB and UPTAC are connected. They are not — these are two entirely independent counselling systems run by different authorities for different sets of institutes. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is the national process that allots leftover seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) after JoSAA's main rounds conclude, operating across the entire country.

UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling) is a state-run counselling process specifically for engineering colleges affiliated with AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) and other UP state technical universities. UPTAC covers a much larger number of colleges than CSAB — including institutions like HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, KNIT Sultanpur, IET Lucknow, and hundreds of other government and private AKTU-affiliated engineering colleges across the state — none of which appear in the CSAB seat matrix.

Why GFTIs Located in UP Cause Confusion

A specific point of confusion arises because some GFTIs participating in CSAB happen to be physically located within Uttar Pradesh. These institutes are centrally funded and recognized under the JoSAA/CSAB framework, which is entirely distinct from state university affiliation. A GFTI seat in a UP-located institute is allotted only through CSAB — never through UPTAC — even though the college sits in the same state that UPTAC governs. Don't assume that a college's physical location in UP means it falls under UPTAC; check its actual participating counselling body.

What This Means for Your Application Strategy

If your target colleges are AKTU-affiliated or other UP state technical university colleges, CSAB registration will not help you — you need to register separately on the official UPTAC portal, fill your own choice list there, and go through UPTAC's independent rounds and reporting process. Conversely, if your target colleges are NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs (including any GFTI physically located in UP), UPTAC registration is irrelevant to you; CSAB is the correct route once JoSAA rounds are complete.

Candidates interested in both sets of institutes — which is common among UP-domiciled candidates weighing NITs/GFTIs against strong AKTU-affiliated colleges like HBTU or MMMUT — should register for and track both processes independently. The two systems don't share a unified seat-locking mechanism, so carefully track each portal's own deadlines for choice locking, seat acceptance, and reporting to avoid missing an opportunity in either process.

CSAB vs UPTAC – FAQs

Common questions about how CSAB and UPTAC counselling processes differ

1
Is UPTAC the same as CSAB?
No, they are separate counselling systems run by different authorities. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is a national process that allots seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) across the country. UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling) is a state-level process for admission to Uttar Pradesh's own engineering colleges — primarily those affiliated with AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) — and covers a completely different, much larger set of state-affiliated colleges.
2
Which colleges does UPTAC cover that CSAB does not?
UPTAC covers state-run and AKTU-affiliated engineering colleges across Uttar Pradesh, including institutions like HBTU Kanpur, MMMUT Gorakhpur, KNIT Sultanpur, IET Lucknow, and hundreds of other AKTU-affiliated private and government colleges. None of these are part of the CSAB seat matrix — CSAB's scope is limited to NITs, IIITs, and centrally recognized GFTIs, not state university-affiliated colleges.
3
Are there GFTIs located in UP that cause confusion with UPTAC?
Yes, this is a common source of confusion. Some GFTIs that participate in CSAB happen to be physically located in Uttar Pradesh, but they are centrally funded institutes recognized under the JoSAA/CSAB framework, not AKTU-affiliated state colleges. A UP-based GFTI seat is allotted only through CSAB, never through UPTAC — the two processes do not share seats even for colleges in the same state.
4
Can I use my JEE Main rank for both CSAB and UPTAC?
Yes, both processes are based on your JEE Main rank, but each requires its own separate registration. Registering for CSAB does not make you eligible for UPTAC seats, and registering for UPTAC does not make you eligible for CSAB seats. If you want to be considered for both NITs/IIITs/GFTIs and UP state colleges, you must register on both csab.nic.in and the official UPTAC portal.
5
Do CSAB and UPTAC run on the same schedule?
Not necessarily — CSAB and UPTAC are administered by entirely different bodies (the central CSAB authority versus the Uttar Pradesh state technical education department) and typically run their own independent registration, choice-filling, and reporting timelines, which may or may not overlap in a given year. Always check both csab.nic.in and the official UPTAC portal separately rather than assuming synchronized dates.
6
If I accept a seat in UPTAC, does it affect my CSAB seat?
Since the two systems are administered independently with their own seat acceptance and locking rules, there is no unified mechanism linking a UPTAC seat acceptance to your CSAB status. Candidates pursuing both should carefully track each portal's own deadlines, freezing rules, and reporting requirements to avoid inadvertently forfeiting a seat in either process.
7
Should I apply to CSAB if I'm only interested in AKTU-affiliated colleges?
No — CSAB registration will not help you secure a seat at an AKTU-affiliated college, since these institutions are not part of the CSAB seat matrix at all. You need to register directly through the UPTAC counselling portal for admission to these colleges.
