CSAB 2026 vs JAC Delhi – Are They the Same?

No — CSAB is national counselling for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, while JAC Delhi is a completely separate Delhi-specific process for DTU, NSUT, and IIIT Delhi.

Two Completely Separate Counselling Systems

A common source of confusion for JEE Main aspirants, especially those based in or targeting colleges in Delhi, is whether CSAB and JAC Delhi are the same process. They are not. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is the national counselling body that allots leftover seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) after JoSAA's main rounds conclude. It operates under the joint oversight structure that runs JoSAA and covers institutes across the entire country.

JAC Delhi (Joint Admission Counselling Delhi), on the other hand, is an entirely independent, Delhi government-run counselling process that allots seats specifically at Delhi's own state-funded engineering institutions — primarily Delhi Technological University (DTU), Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT, including its East and West Delhi campuses), Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW), and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT Delhi). None of these institutes are part of the CSAB seat matrix, and CSAB has no authority or involvement in admissions to any of them.

Why the Confusion Happens

Both processes use your JEE Main rank as the eligibility basis, both typically run in a similar mid-to-late-year window, and DTU/NSUT are extremely popular destinations often discussed in the same breath as NITs in terms of prestige and placement outcomes. This overlap in timing, rank basis, and popularity leads many candidates to assume the two are linked or that one automatically covers the other — which is incorrect.

What This Means for Your Application Strategy

If DTU, NSUT, or IIIT Delhi are among your target colleges, registering for CSAB alone will not help you — you must separately register on the official JAC Delhi counselling portal, fill a distinct choice list, and go through JAC Delhi's own rounds and reporting process. Likewise, if your target colleges are NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs, JAC Delhi registration is irrelevant to you; CSAB is the correct (and only) route for those seats once JoSAA rounds are done.

Candidates interested in both sets of institutes — which is common, since DTU/NSUT and many NITs are comparable choices — need to register for and actively track both processes independently. The two systems don't share a unified seat-locking mechanism, so carefully track each portal's own deadlines for choice locking, seat acceptance, and reporting to avoid losing an opportunity in either process.

CSAB vs JAC Delhi – FAQs

Common questions about how CSAB and JAC Delhi counselling processes differ

1
Is JAC Delhi the same as CSAB?
No, they are completely separate and independently operated counselling processes. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is a national process that allots seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) across the whole country. JAC Delhi (Joint Admission Counselling Delhi) is a Delhi-specific counselling process for admission to Delhi government engineering colleges — primarily DTU, NSUT, and IIIT Delhi — and is not part of the national JoSAA/CSAB system.
2
Which colleges does JAC Delhi cover that CSAB does not?
JAC Delhi covers Delhi Technological University (DTU), Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT, including its East and West Delhi campuses), Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW), and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT Delhi). None of these institutes are part of the CSAB seat matrix — they run their own admission process for both Delhi-domicile and outside-Delhi candidates through JAC Delhi.
3
Can I use my JEE Main rank for both CSAB and JAC Delhi?
Yes, both processes use your JEE Main (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech) rank as the basis for eligibility and seat allotment, but you must register separately for each — a CSAB registration does not automatically make you eligible for JAC Delhi, and vice versa. If you want to be considered for both NITs/IIITs/GFTIs and DTU/NSUT/IIITD, you need two separate registrations on two separate portals.
4
Do CSAB and JAC Delhi run on the same schedule?
Not necessarily — the two processes are administered by different bodies (CSAB nationally, and the Delhi government's Joint Admission Counselling body for JAC Delhi) and can have overlapping but distinct registration, choice-filling, and reporting windows. Always check both csab.nic.in and the official JAC Delhi portal independently rather than assuming synchronized dates.
5
If I get a seat in JAC Delhi, does it affect my CSAB seat?
Since the two are administered independently, seat acceptance rules differ across the two systems, and there is no unified locking mechanism between them in the way there is between JoSAA and CSAB. Candidates juggling both should carefully track each portal's own seat acceptance, freezing, and float/slide rules to avoid losing a seat in either process due to a missed deadline.
6
Why do Delhi-region JEE Main candidates get confused between the two?
The confusion is understandable — both are counselling processes based on JEE Main rank, both happen around the same time of year, and DTU/NSUT are extremely popular choices comparable in prestige to many NITs. But CSAB's authority extends only to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs recognized under the central JoSAA/CSAB framework; DTU, NSUT, IGDTUW, and IIITD are Delhi state government institutions that never appear in the CSAB seat matrix.
7
Should I apply to CSAB if I only want DTU or NSUT?
No — CSAB registration will not help you get into DTU or NSUT since these institutes don't participate in the CSAB process at all. You need to register directly and separately through the JAC Delhi counselling portal to be considered for these institutes.
