JEE Main → JoSAA → CSAB 2026 Admission Calendar

One unified timeline covering JEE Main 2026 sessions, JoSAA counselling rounds, and CSAB special rounds from January through August.

Why this matters: Engineering admission in India via JEE Main is a multi-stage funnel — JEE Main determines your rank, JoSAA uses that rank to allot seats at IITs (via JEE Advanced), NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs across 5-6 rounds, and CSAB then mops up leftover NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats through special rounds. Understanding how these three processes connect — and where one ends and the next begins — helps you plan document readiness, fee payments, and decision windows well in advance.

How the Three Stages Connect

Stage 1: JEE Main 2026

JEE Main runs across two sessions (January and April 2026), and your final percentile is computed using the better of your scores across attempted sessions. This produces your All India Rank (AIR) / Common Rank List (CRL) rank, which becomes the entry credential for both JEE Advanced (for IIT aspirants) and JoSAA (for NIT/IIIT/GFTI aspirants, and IIT aspirants who clear JEE Advanced).

Stage 2: JoSAA 2026

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) uses your JEE Main rank (and JEE Advanced rank if applicable) to run a multi-round seat allotment process across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Each round involves seat allotment, a choice to accept/decline/float/slide, and fee payment. After the final round (Round 5 in 2026), any seats still vacant — due to withdrawals, non-reporting, or upgrades — get carried forward into the CSAB process.

Stage 3: CSAB 2026

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) picks up exactly where JoSAA leaves off, running special rounds (SR1, SR2) plus NEUT (North-East/UT) and supernumerary channels to allot the leftover NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats. CSAB requires a fresh registration, its own choice list, and its own reporting process — it is not an automatic continuation of your JoSAA registration.

JEE → JoSAA → CSAB Timeline – FAQs

Common questions about how JEE Main, JoSAA, and CSAB connect in the 2026 admission cycle

1
What is the overall admission sequence for engineering in 2026?
The sequence runs JEE Main 2026 (Session 1 in January, Session 2 in April) → JEE Main results and All India Rank → JoSAA 2026 registration and 5-6 rounds of counselling (roughly June to mid-July) → CSAB 2026 special rounds (late July through mid-August) for leftover NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats. Each stage feeds into the next; you cannot register for JoSAA without a valid JEE Main rank, and CSAB eligibility is linked to JoSAA participation and the post-JoSAA vacancy situation.
2
Do I need to register separately for JoSAA and CSAB?
Yes. JoSAA registration is a distinct step after JEE Main results, and CSAB requires its own separate registration after JoSAA's rounds conclude, on csab.nic.in. You cannot carry over your JoSAA registration into CSAB automatically — though your JEE Main rank and JoSAA participation history (such as NIT+ withdrawal status) do factor into CSAB eligibility.
3
Why does CSAB start only after JoSAA ends?
CSAB exists specifically to fill seats that remain vacant at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA's main rounds (typically 5 rounds) conclude — including seats vacated by candidates who withdrew, upgraded, or didn't report. This is why CSAB's registration and vacancy display only open after JoSAA's final round results and the subsequent NIT+ withdrawal and fee-payment windows are complete.
4
How long does the entire JEE-to-CSAB journey typically take?
From JEE Main Session 1 (January) to the conclusion of CSAB reporting (mid-August), the full admission journey typically spans around seven months, though most of the counselling-specific activity (JoSAA plus CSAB) is concentrated within a roughly 10-11 week window from early June to mid-August.
5
What happens between JoSAA Round 5 and CSAB registration?
After JoSAA Round 5 results, there's typically a short but important window covering the NIT+ withdrawal option (for candidates who want to exit JoSAA and become CSAB-eligible), Partial Admission Fee (PAF) payment, and category restoration — usually spanning about a week to ten days before CSAB registration opens.
6
Is this timeline the same every year?
The overall sequence (JEE Main → JoSAA → CSAB) is consistent every year, but exact dates shift based on JEE Main exam scheduling, result declaration timing, and administrative factors. Always cross-check the live schedule on jeemain.nta.nic.in, josaa.nic.in, and csab.nic.in rather than relying solely on a static calendar.
