College Prediction by Rank – How It Works

Rank-based college prediction is the most direct approach to JoSAA counselling. Your JEE Main CRL rank (from the NTA scorecard) is what JoSAA uses for NIT, IIIT and GFTI seat allotment. Your JEE Advanced rank is used for IIT seat allotment.

Our predictor compares your rank against JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks for each programme. A programme is shown as a match if your rank is at or better than (numerically less than or equal to) the Round 6 closing rank.

Three key inputs determine your prediction: (1) Your CRL rank — lower number means more options; (2) Your category — OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS categories have separate reserved seats with higher closing ranks; (3) Home state — 50% of NIT seats are for home state candidates at relaxed cutoffs.

For example, NIT Trichy CSE 2025: CRL other-state closing rank ~1,100; CRL home-state (Tamil Nadu) closing rank ~3,200; OBC-NCL other-state closing rank ~2,400.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JoSAA college prediction by rank

1
What rank should I enter — percentile or actual rank?
Enter your actual CRL (Common Rank List) rank from your JEE Main scorecard, not percentile. If you only have percentile, use our rank predictor to convert: Rank ≈ (1 − percentile/100) × 14,00,000.
2
How does the predictor use my rank to show colleges?
The predictor filters JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks where your rank falls at or before the closing rank. It also considers category rank (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) if applicable, and home state for HS quota seats.
3
Should I predict by CRL rank or category rank?
Always predict with both. Enter CRL rank to see open category options. Enter your OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS rank (from scorecard) to see reserved category options. Often, category rank opens many more colleges.
4
What is home state quota and how does it affect prediction?
NITs reserve 50% of seats for home state (HS) candidates. Home state closing ranks are typically 2–5x higher (worse) than other-state ranks for the same programme. If you're from a NIT's home state, filter by HS quota for realistic predictions.
5
My rank is 8,000 — what are my realistic JoSAA 2026 options?
At CRL rank 8,000 you can target: NIT Rourkela CSE (HS quota from Odisha), IIIT Allahabad IT (closing ~8,500), NIT Jaipur Mech, NIT Bhopal CSE (HS), NIT Nagpur ECE, GFTI options. Use our predictor for a complete list by category and home state.
