JoSAA 2027 NRI Seats in NITs – DASA vs JoSAA Explained

NRI/PIO/OCI admission to NITs is primarily via DASA, not JoSAA — the stable structure explained.

Disclaimer: JoSAA 2027 and DASA 2027 have not begun and no official fees, SAT cutoffs, or dates exist as of October 2026. This page explains the stable DASA-vs-JoSAA mechanism used in past cycles (2024–2026). Verify current figures at dasa.nic.in and josaa.nic.in once released.

How DASA Is Expected to Work for 2027

DASA remains the primary route for NRI, PIO, OCI, and SAARC candidates to gain admission to NITs, IITs, and other centrally funded institutes. It is managed centrally by NIT Trichy on behalf of participating institutes — a structure that has been stable for many years.

  1. Appear in SAT (or the eligibility test specified for that cycle).
  2. Register on dasa.nic.in with SAT scores and required documents.
  3. Fill a choice list for preferred institutes and branches — conceptually similar to JoSAA.
  4. Pay the DASA processing and seat acceptance fee.
  5. Accept the allotment and report to the institute.

1
Can an NRI candidate participate in JoSAA 2027?
NRI candidates holding an Indian passport who appear in JEE Main 2027 can participate in JoSAA under the Indian candidate category, as has been the case in past cycles. However, most NRI/PIO/OCI candidates seeking NIT admission use the DASA scheme (dasa.nic.in) instead, which is based on SAT scores rather than JEE Main.
2
What is the DASA scheme and will it continue for 2027?
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a stable, long-running scheme managed by NIT Trichy on behalf of all NITs, IITs, and other centrally funded institutes, specifically for NRI, PIO, OCI, and SAARC candidates. It is reasonably expected to continue in 2027 given its consistent operation across many years, though specific SAT cutoffs and fee figures for 2027 are not yet announced.
3
How do NRI fees compare to Indian resident fees at NITs?
In past cycles, NRI candidates admitted through DASA have paid significantly higher fees (historically in the range of several thousand US dollars per year) compared to Indian resident students admitted via JoSAA (historically a much smaller amount in rupees). Exact 2027 fee figures will only be available once the DASA 2027 prospectus is released.
4
Are NRI/DASA seats additional to regular JoSAA seats?
Yes — this has been a consistent structural feature. NRI seats under DASA are supernumerary, created over and above the regular JoSAA intake, meaning they do not reduce the number of seats available to Indian resident students admitted via JoSAA.
5
Can an NRI with a good JEE Main rank use JoSAA instead of DASA?
If the candidate holds Indian citizenship and qualifies JEE Main, they can in principle use JoSAA at Indian resident fee rates, as has been possible in past cycles. However, category reservation eligibility (OBC/EWS etc.) for NRIs can be a nuanced area — this is a complex topic worth checking against the current year's brochure rather than assuming past rules carry over unchanged.
