How DASA Works for NIT Admission
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is the main route for NRI, PIO, OCI, and SAARC candidates to gain admission to NITs, IITs, and other centrally funded institutes. It is managed centrally by NIT Trichy on behalf of all participating institutes.
DASA Key Steps:
- Appear in SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) — typically in January/March of the admission year. Aim for 1440+ for top NITs.
- Register on dasa.nic.in and submit SAT scores, academic records, and required documents.
- Fill choice list for preferred institutes and branches (similar concept to JoSAA).
- Pay the DASA processing fee and seat acceptance fee in USD.
- Accept allotment and report to the institute.
DASA vs JEE for NRIs: Some NRI candidates also qualify JEE Main with good scores. If they hold Indian citizenship, they can use JoSAA at Indian fee rates. However, most NRI/OCI candidates take the DASA route as it is specifically designed for them.
NRI Fee Structure at NITs
DASA / NRI Rate
$8,000–$12,000
USD per year (approx. Rs.6.6–10 lakhs at current rates)
Indian Resident Rate
Rs.60K–1.5L
per year (JoSAA-admitted Indian resident students)
NRI seats are supernumerary (~15% over regular intake) — they do not reduce seats for Indian resident students.
