JoSAA 2026 Seat Withdrawal

How to withdraw from JoSAA 2026 counselling, refund policy, and consequences — understand before you decide.

When Should You Consider Withdrawal?

JoSAA 2026 withdrawal should be a last resort. Before withdrawing, exhaust all rounds with the Float option to maximize your chance of upgrade. Common reasons candidates withdraw include: deciding to join a private college (BITS, VIT, etc.), qualifying for a preferred state counselling, or choosing a different career path entirely.

If you received an allotment but are unsatisfied with the institute/branch, do NOT withdraw immediately. Use Float option and wait for subsequent rounds. Significant seat movement happens in Rounds 2–5 as other candidates upgrade or exit.

JoSAA 2026 Withdrawal – FAQs

Common questions about withdrawing from JoSAA 2026 seat allotment

1
Can I get a refund of the ₹35,000 seat acceptance fee if I withdraw from JoSAA 2026?
Yes, but with conditions. If you withdraw before Round 5 allotment (i.e., during the active rounds), you get a refund of ₹35,000 minus ₹1,000 processing fee = ₹34,000 (or ₹15,000 minus ₹1,000 = ₹14,000 for SC/ST/PwD). If you withdraw after Round 5 and before the institute's physical reporting deadline, the refund amount may be reduced. After physical reporting, no refund is given.
2
What happens to my JoSAA participation if I withdraw?
Once you withdraw from JoSAA 2026, you exit the counselling process entirely. Your allotted seat is released and offered to other candidates. You cannot re-enter JoSAA 2026 after withdrawal. You can still participate in CSAB 2026 special rounds or state counselling for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats.
3
If I withdraw from JoSAA and join a state college, can I use my JEE score for NIT later?
No. JEE Main 2026 score is valid only for JoSAA 2026 and CSAB 2026 counselling in the current year. If you withdraw and join a private or state college, you cannot use the same score to apply to NITs in a future year — you would need to appear in JEE Main again.
4
How long does the JoSAA 2026 refund take to process?
JoSAA typically processes refunds within 7–14 working days of the withdrawal request. The refund goes back to the original bank account used for payment. Keep your payment transaction ID and bank details handy. If refund is delayed beyond 30 days, contact the JoSAA helpdesk.
5
Can I withdraw from JoSAA 2026 if I only have a preferred institute but got a different one?
Yes. If you received an allotment to an institute/branch you are not interested in and want to explore other options (state counselling, private colleges), you can withdraw. However, consider choosing Float first to get a chance at upgrade in subsequent rounds before making the withdrawal decision.
