JoSAA 2026 Round 5 – Last Real Upgrade Chance
Float vs Freeze Assessment · Seat Movement Data · Parallel Reporting Preparation
Why Round 5 Is the Last Meaningful Upgrade Opportunity
Round 5 is the final round, accounting for the last few percent of total JoSAA seat movement. Since Round 5 is the final round, its upgrade volume is small — it is effectively a final-fill round rather than an upgrade opportunity. Round 5 is where the last real Float upgrades occur.

~93%

~7% fill in Round 5 (final)
The candidates who typically upgrade in Round 5 are those whose rank was borderline close to a target program's closing rank — within 3–5% — but the seat was not available in Rounds 3 and 4 due to insufficient vacancy creation. What drives Round 5 vacancies is primarily late withdrawals: candidates who Froze in earlier rounds but never completed online document verification or who voluntarily withdrew after deciding to pursue a different option.
Key insight: If you have floated through Rounds 1–4 and the gap to your target has not narrowed, Round 5 is your honest last chance to assess whether the upgrade remains possible — or whether Freezing and committing to your current seat is the rational choice.
Seat Movement Data by Round — The Declining Curve
Understanding how seat movement declines across rounds helps calibrate expectations for Round 5 (final):
| Round | Approx Seat Changes | Share of Total Movement | Characteristic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | ~55,000–65,000 | ~45% | Largest single-round movement; first full allocation pass across all seats |
| Round 2 | ~18,000–22,000 | ~17% | Highest post-Round 1 movement; bulk Float upgrades and first-time allotments |
| Round 3 | ~10,000–13,000 | ~10% | Significant but declining; continued Float upgrades from Rounds 1–2 floaters |
| Round 4 | ~7,000–9,000 | ~7% | Moderate; late-stage Float upgrades and new allotments in GFTI and lower-tier programs |
| Round 5 (Final) | ~4,000–6,000 | ~4–5% | Last and final round; driven largely by late withdrawals and Round 4 Freeze exits, plus tail-end fills in previously unfilled seats |
The pattern is clear: seat movement declines steeply after Round 2. By Round 5, you are competing for 4,000–6,000 seat changes across the entire national pool of programs. Upgrade probability depends almost entirely on whether your specific target program creates a vacancy in that thin pool.

The Round 5 Float/Freeze Assessment Framework
Use this framework after seeing your Round 5 result to make the final decision for Round 5 — the last round:
Float for Round 5 if:
- Your rank is within 3–5% of the Round 5 closing rank for your target choice
- You have observed any narrowing of the gap across Rounds 3–5 (closing rank moving toward you)
- Your target program historically sees some final-round movement (check JoSAA 2025 round-wise data)
- You genuinely prefer the target over your current allotment and have no other confirmed options
Freeze after Round 5 if:
- The gap to your target has not changed across Rounds 3–5 (closing rank is stable, not moving toward you)
- Your target choice is more than 10% away in rank from the Round 5 closing rank
- You are satisfied with your current allotment and would rather focus on pre-joining preparation
- You want certainty to book travel and accommodation for reporting before the final reporting date
The honest question to ask yourself:"If I Float for Round 5 and don't get upgraded — am I genuinely content with my current allotment?" If the answer is yes, Float freely. If the answer is no, you have a problem that Floating cannot solve — you need to explore CSAB, state counselling, or reconsider your entire decision.
Parallel Document Preparation for Institute Reporting
Round 4 → Round 5 gap is typically just 2–3 days. Round 5 → Physical Reporting window is just 2–5 days at most institutes. This means you have virtually no buffer. Start the following preparations during Round 5, not after Round 5:
| Document / Action | Status to Confirm Now |
|---|---|
| Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate | Both must be originals. Check they are in a safe, portable folder. |
| Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate | Same as above. If board certificate hasn't arrived, obtain provisional certificate from board now. |
| JEE Main 2026 scorecard | Download from jeemain.nta.nic.in. Print 2 copies. Keep digital backup. |
| JEE Advanced 2026 scorecard (IIT allottees) | Download from jeeadv.ac.in. Print 2 copies. Required only if allotted an IIT. |
| JoSAA allotment letter | Download from josaa.nic.in after Round 5. This will be updated after Round 5 — keep both copies. |
| Category certificate (OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST) | Must be current/valid. OBC-NCL often has annual validity. Check expiry and reissue if needed. |
| Photo ID (Aadhaar preferred) | Aadhaar card is accepted at all institutes. Ensure it is not expired or damaged. |
| 8–10 passport-size photographs | Recent photos with white/light background. Formal attire. Some institutes specify exact size. |
| JoSAA fee payment receipts | Keep digital + printed copies of all round fee payments from josaa.nic.in. |
| Travel and accommodation | Book train/flight to institute city now. Last-minute prices are 3–5x higher during peak counselling season. |
If Not Upgraded by Round 5: Realistic Options
Not upgrading to your aspirational choice by Round 5 is completely normal — most candidates end up with seats that were not their first choice. Here is how to think about what comes next:
Accept your current allotment with commitment
If your current seat is at a good NIT, IIIT, or IIT — accept it fully. Many students build exceptional careers from seats that were their 4th or 5th choice. Your performance in college matters far more than whether the institute was your first pick in counselling.
CSAB Special Rounds 2026 (for NIT/IIIT/GFTI vacancies)
After JoSAA Round 5 and the NIT+ partial fee payment window (July 22-24) concluded, CSAB ran Special Round 1 (SR1) and Special Round 2 (SR2) for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats that remained vacant. Registration and vacancy display ran July 28 to August 3, 2026 on csab.nic.in; the SR1 result was declared August 6 and the SR2 result was declared August 12 — CSAB 2026 counselling is now complete. If you were not satisfied with your JoSAA allotment, CSAB is the legitimate next step. IIT seats are NOT available through CSAB.
State counselling and private universities
If you have been running parallel registrations in state counselling boards or private universities (BITSAT, VITEEE, etc.), now is the time to evaluate those options seriously. Compare them against your JoSAA allotment on placement records, branch quality, and infrastructure before making a final choice.
