Round 5 (Final) Released July 16, 2026 · JoSAA 2026 Concluded · Float/Freeze Decision Recap · CSAB Backup Plan
Where You Are After Round 4
By Round 4 (declared July 10, 2026), JoSAA counselling was in its final phase. Round 5 (final) has since been released on July 16, 2026, and JoSAA 2026 has concluded — here is a recap of where things stood after Round 4, for reference:

Most candidates were at or near their final seat by Round 4. The upgrade pool had shrunk considerably compared to Rounds 2 and 3. Round 5 still mattered — thousands of seats changed hands, and candidates close to their target closing ranks received upgrades. JoSAA 2026 has now concluded; unallotted candidates should check CSAB 2026 (registration closed August 3, 2026 — SR1 result declared August 6, SR2 result declared around August 12).
The Round 4 Checklist (For Reference)
This is what candidates needed to complete before each round's response window closed:
Fee paid for current allotment
Must be paid within the response window of each round
Documents uploaded on JoSAA portal
Online document verification is required to confirm seat
Freeze/Float/Slide choice updated
Update before the response window closes for Round 4
Physical document collection started
Start gathering originals now — do not wait until the final round
CSAB backup plan in place
csab.nic.in registration & vacancy display closed Aug 3, 2026 for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats — SR1 result declared Aug 6, SR2 result expected ~Aug 12
Should You Float or Freeze at the Round 4 Stage?
This decision matrix was used to make the Float vs Freeze call at Round 4, before Round 5 (final) was released:
Float if:
- • Your target choice's closing rank is within 5–10% of your rank
- • You observed movement toward your target in Rounds 2 and 3
- • You are not fully satisfied with your current allotment
- • You would genuinely prefer the higher choice for 4 years
Freeze if:
- • Your target requires a rank significantly better than yours
- • You are genuinely satisfied with your current allotment
- • Your remaining Float choices are IIT Bombay/Delhi CSE-level — almost no Round 5 movement
The Key Question
"If Round 5 passes and I don't get upgraded, am I genuinely happy with my current seat?" If yes, Float freely — there's no risk. If no, you have a problem that cannot be solved by Floating — you need to reassess your backup options including CSAB.
Physical Preparation to Start Now
The reporting window after Round 5 (final) was extremely tight — typically only 2–5 days at the institute level. Starting preparation as early as Round 4, rather than waiting for the final result, was the right call for most candidates.

CSAB Backup Registration
If you did not receive any JoSAA seat even after Round 5 (final) — JoSAA 2026 has now concluded — CSAB is your post-JoSAA safety net:
What is CSAB?
Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special rounds for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats that remain vacant after JoSAA Round 5. It uses the same JEE rank list.
When does CSAB 2026 open?
CSAB registration and vacancy display ran July 28 to August 3, 2026, after JoSAA Round 5 and the NIT+ partial fee payment window concluded. The SR1 result was declared August 6, and the SR2 result was declared August 12 on csab.nic.in — CSAB 2026 counselling is now complete.
Who should register for CSAB?
Any JEE Main candidate who did not get a satisfactory JoSAA seat by Round 5. CSAB offers NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats — IIT seats are NOT offered through CSAB.
Can I participate in CSAB even with a JoSAA seat?
Yes, but if you accept a CSAB seat, you may need to surrender your JoSAA seat. Read CSAB's guidelines carefully before participating.
