JoSAA 2026 Round 2 – Freeze or Float?

Freeze, Float, and Slide — Definitions
After each round result, every allotted candidate must select one of three options in their JoSAA portal response window:
You are satisfied with your current allotment. Freezing locks your seat permanently — you will not be considered for upgrades in remaining rounds. Your seat is confirmed and no further action is required after the fee payment. This is the right choice when you have achieved your target or no higher realistic choice exists.
Risk level: No risk. Seat is secured.
You want to continue seeking a better allotment. The algorithm will try to upgrade you to any higher-preference choice on your locked list in the next round. If an upgrade is found, your old seat is released and replaced with the new one. If no upgrade is available, your current seat remains unchanged.
Risk level: Zero risk to current seat. Algorithm cannot downgrade you.
A targeted upgrade option: you want a better branch at your currently allotted institute, but you do NOT want to move to a different institute. Slide only considers higher-preference choices at the same institute on your list. Useful if you specifically want CSE at NIT Rourkela instead of Mechanical at NIT Rourkela, but don't want to risk moving to a different NIT entirely.
Risk level: Zero risk to current seat. Limited to same-institute upgrade.
When to FREEZE After Round 2
Freeze is the right choice in these specific situations:
You received your top-1 or top-2 choice
If Round 2 gave you exactly what you wanted most, there is no point Floating. Lock in the seat and start preparation.
All Float choices above you require a rank 20%+ better than yours
Look up Round 2 closing ranks for your next 10 choices on your list. If all of them closed at ranks significantly better than yours (20% or more), the algorithm has essentially no realistic upgrade path available in the 3 remaining rounds.
Your current allotment is at a top-tier program with almost no movement
NIT Trichy CSE, NIT Surathkal CSE, NIT Warangal CSE, IIT Bombay/Delhi/Madras in any branch — these programs see almost zero vacancy creation across rounds because candidates who get them immediately Freeze. If you're there, Freeze.
The uncertainty is materially affecting your wellbeing or preparation
Float is logistically risk-free but not psychologically risk-free. If the uncertainty of waiting 3 more weeks is causing serious stress or distracting from preparation, Freezing is a reasonable personal choice even if upgrade is marginally possible.
When to FLOAT After Round 2
Float is the right choice when realistic upgrade opportunities remain:
You have 1–2 realistic higher choices within 10–15% rank gap
If your next-best locked choice had a Round 2 closing rank within 10–15% of your rank, the algorithm has a real chance of bridging that gap in the 3 remaining rounds. Float is worth it.
Your target program is at a newer IIT or mid-tier NIT
Newer IITs (Goa, Jodhpur, Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwad) and mid-tier NITs (Durgapur, Silchar, Hamirpur, Rourkela) see meaningful seat movement in Rounds 3–5 because many candidates there Float hoping for better seats, creating cascading vacancies.
You are not fully committed to a 4-year program at your current allotment
If you would genuinely be disappointed spending 4 years at your current allotted program and there is a better realistic option above it — Float. The logistical cost is zero.
Your rank is in the 3,000–20,000 range and 3 rounds remain
This rank band sees the most active upgrade movement in Rounds 3–5. With 3 rounds remaining, the upgrade probability per round (5–15%) compounds meaningfully. Floating is statistically worth it.
Strategy by JEE Main Rank Band
General guidance for the Round 2 Freeze/Float decision by rank range:
JEE Main rank 1–3,000 (IIT range)
Freeze (if top IIT) / Float (if newer IIT)Likely current allotment: Likely allotted at an older IIT branch
Float only if your next choice is a significantly better IIT branch (e.g., from IIT Guwahati CSE to IIT Kharagpur CSE). If you are at IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi in your preferred branch — Freeze immediately.
JEE Main rank 3,000–8,000
Case-by-case — check rank gapLikely current allotment: Newer IIT, or NIT Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal CSE possible
If at NIT Trichy CSE or older NIT flagship branches — Freeze. If at a newer IIT and have realistic older IIT choices — Float. If at NIT Warangal ECE and want CSE at top NIT — Float but manage expectations.
JEE Main rank 8,000–20,000
Float if gap is <15%Likely current allotment: Mid-tier NIT CSE/ECE or newer NIT CSE
Active Float zone. Check if your rank is within 10–15% of your next target choice's Round 2 closing rank. If yes, Float through at least Round 3. If the gap is larger, consider Freezing at a good mid-tier NIT rather than waiting indefinitely.
JEE Main rank 20,000–50,000
Float — 3 rounds remainLikely current allotment: Lower-tier NIT, IIIT, or GFTI programs
Float if you have realistic choices at mid-tier NITs or IIITs. Check whether your target's Round 2 closing rank is within reach at your rank with further relaxation. Many IIIT seats see meaningful movement in Rounds 3–5.
JEE Main rank 50,000+
Stay in process / CSAB backupLikely current allotment: GFTI, newer IIIT, or not yet allotted
Stay in the process and Float. If allotted a GFTI seat, consider whether the program meets your needs — Freeze if it does. If not allotted, no action needed. CSAB special rounds post-Round 5 often fill GFTI seats for this rank range.
The One Rule That Never Changes
Float is always logistically zero-risk. Your current seat can never be taken away by Floating — the algorithm can only upgrade you, never downgrade. The decision between Freeze and Float is entirely about whether realistic upgrade opportunities exist at your rank and whether you genuinely want them. Do not let fear of uncertainty make you Freeze prematurely when good seats are still within reach.
