JoSAA 2026 PwD Cutoff – Person with Disability Quota Ranks

5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates — how it works, cutoff ranks, and eligibility criteria.

How PwD Reservation Works in JoSAA 2026

PwD (Person with Disability) reservation is horizontal — it cuts across all vertical categories. Of every 20 General seats, 1 is PwD-General. Of every 20 OBC-NCL seats, 1 is PwD-OBC, and so on. If a PwD seat goes unfilled within a category, it may be converted to a non-PwD seat in that category through the de-reservation process.

PwD candidates must have at least 40% disability as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The disability must be certified by a government-authorized medical authority. Candidates who marked PwD in their JEE application are eligible to be considered for these seats automatically in JoSAA.

JoSAA 2026 PwD Cutoff – FAQs

Common questions about PwD disability quota cutoffs in JoSAA 2026

1
What is PwD horizontal reservation in JoSAA 2026?
PwD (Person with Disability) reservation is a horizontal reservation of 5% across all vertical categories (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). This means 5% of seats within each category are sub-reserved for PwD candidates. For example, in a General category pool of 20 seats, 1 seat is PwD-General. PwD candidates compete among themselves within their respective category for these sub-reserved seats.
2
What disabilities qualify for PwD reservation in JoSAA 2026?
Candidates with 40% or more disability as defined under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 are eligible. This includes locomotor disability, visual impairment (blindness/low vision), hearing impairment, and other specified disabilities. A disability certificate from a competent medical authority must be submitted during document verification. JEE Main/Advanced applications must also have the PwD category marked.
3
How are PwD cutoffs different from regular cutoffs?
PwD cutoffs (closing ranks) are typically much higher numerically than the corresponding category's general cutoff, because PwD seats are fewer (5% of category seats) and only PwD candidates compete for them. For example, IIT Bombay CSE General closing rank might be ~67 (JEE Advanced), while IIT Bombay CSE General-PwD closing rank could be ~300–600. For NITs, the gap is similarly wide.
4
Can PwD candidates choose both PwD and non-PwD programs in JoSAA choice filling?
Yes. PwD candidates can fill choices for both PwD seats and regular seats in the same program. JoSAA will first try to allot you a PwD seat. If you are eligible for a non-PwD seat based on your category rank as well, you can also be considered for those. It is advisable to fill both types of choices to maximize your chances.
5
Do PwD candidates need to attend special reporting in JoSAA 2026?
PwD candidates must appear at the reporting center for document verification and disability certificate validation. The medical board at IITs/NITs will verify the disability certificate. If your disability is temporary or the certificate is outdated, it may be rejected. Ensure you carry a valid disability certificate (issued within 6 months if it has an expiry, or a permanent certificate). Provisional admission may be cancelled if the disability is not verified.
