I Made a Mistake in JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling — Now What?
What's fixable before the lock · What's not fixable after · How Float helps you recover
Types of Choice Filling Mistakes
Before panicking, understand what kind of mistake you made. JoSAA 2026 choice filling mistakes fall into four broad categories, and the solution differs for each:
✓ Fixable (window open)
Wrong ordering
You added the right colleges but in the wrong sequence — a safe choice ended up above your dream choice.
✓ Fixable (window open)
Forgot to add a choice
You wanted to include IIT X or NIT Y but forgot to add it before locking.
✓ Fixable (window open)
Added wrong branch
You added Mechanical instead of CSE, or ECE instead of EE at a specific institute.
✗ Not fixable (window closed)
Already locked with error
You locked choices and the window has now closed with the mistake in place.
What Is Fixable: Editing Before the Lock Deadline
As long as the JoSAA choice filling window is open, everything is fixable. Even if you already locked your choices, you can unlock them, make edits, and re-lock. This is by design — JoSAA expects candidates to review and refine choices multiple times.
How to Check If the Window Is Still Open
- Go to josaa.nic.in and log in with your credentials.
- Navigate to the "Choice Filling" section of your dashboard.
- If the choice filling section shows an editable interface or a countdown timer, the window is still open.
- If it shows a read-only view of your submitted choices, the window is closed.
How to Unlock and Edit Locked Choices
- Login to josaa.nic.in.
- In the choice filling section, look for "Unlock Choices" or "Edit Choices" button.
- Your choices will become editable. Make corrections: reorder, add, or remove choices as needed.
- After making all changes, click "Lock Choices" again before the deadline.
- Take a screenshot of the lock confirmation page for your records.
Important Warning
Once you unlock choices, your choices are in an "unlocked" state. If the window closes while they are still unlocked, they may not be processed. Always re-lock immediately after editing — do not unlock and walk away.
What Is NOT Fixable: After the Window Closes
Once the choice filling window closes for a round, your locked choices are final for that round. You cannot add new choices, change order, or delete choices. This is absolutely strict — no exceptions are made.
You cannot add IIT/NIT choices that you forgot to include.
You cannot fix a wrong branch (e.g., you added Mechanical instead of CSE).
You cannot reorder choices that were locked in the wrong sequence.
No appeal or helpdesk contact can override the closed window.
At this stage, your only tools are Float (to upgrade in subsequent rounds) and CSAB (if JoSAA concludes without a satisfactory result).
Damage Control: Using Float to Upgrade After Allotment
If the window has closed with a mistake in your choice list, Float is your primary recovery mechanism. Here is how it works:
What is Float?
After each JoSAA round, if you receive a seat allotment, you must choose one of three options: Freeze, Float, or Slide. Choosing Float means:
- You accept your current allotment (it is secured as your minimum).
- JoSAA will try to upgrade you to a higher-ranked choice in your locked list in the next round, if a seat becomes available.
- If an upgrade is available, your seat is automatically upgraded. If not, you retain your current seat.
- You can never end up worse than your current allotment by choosing Float.
Float Scenario: Wrong Choice Order
Suppose you mistakenly put NIT Calicut CSE at Choice 3 and IIT Jodhpur CSE at Choice 1. You get IIT Jodhpur CSE in Round 1 but actually prefer NIT Calicut CSE. Since NIT Calicut CSE is already ranked below your current allotment in your locked list, Float cannot help — it can only upgrade to choices higher in your list.
However, if you put a less-preferred college at Choice 1 and got allotted there, Float can upgrade you toward the more-preferred Choice 2, 3, etc. in subsequent rounds.
Psychological Reassurance
A mistake in ordering or a forgotten choice is not the end of the world. JoSAA runs 5 rounds, and significant seat movement happens between rounds. Candidates who Float aggressively across all 5 rounds often end up in much better seats than Round 1 allotments. Stay calm, accept your allotment, choose Float, and let the process work.
If after 5 rounds you are still not satisfied, CSAB 2026 is the next opportunity — and the CSAB pool includes NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats that you can access afresh with a new choice list.
