JoSAA 2026 – What If You Miss the Choice Lock Deadline?
Consequences · What To Do Right Now · Alternatives After Missing Deadline
If the Window is Still Open — Act NOW
If the choice filling window is still open even for a few minutes, go to josaa.nic.in immediately, login, add any choices you have, and click Lock. Do not read further — go lock first.
What Happens if Choice Lock Deadline is Missed
Missing the JoSAA choice lock deadline is a serious situation with no automatic remedy. Here is what the official position is:
If you registered AND saved choices but didn't lock:
Your saved (unlocked) preference order may be considered by the system in some years, but this is not officially guaranteed. Treat it as effectively not participating. Do not assume saved choices will be processed.
If you registered but never started filling choices:
You are in the JoSAA system but without any choices submitted, no allotment can be made for you. You are effectively out of JoSAA for this year's rounds.
JoSAA does NOT grant individual extensions:
Extensions to choice filling windows have historically only occurred when server failures affected all candidates system-wide — not for individual circumstances.
Can You Still Participate After Missing Lock Deadline?
Saved but not locked
Partial participation possible in some scenarios. Your saved choices might be processed. Contact JoSAA helpdesk to confirm.
No choices ever added
No allotment possible. The algorithm has nothing to work with. You need alternative counselling options.
If you registered and the window has closed, you remain in the JoSAA system as a registered candidate but without an active choice list. You cannot add or reorder choices now. If you never even started filling choices after registering, contact the JoSAA helpdesk at josaa.nic.in immediately — they may advise on your specific situation.
What to Do RIGHT NOW If You've Missed / Are About to Miss
- 1
Go to josaa.nic.in immediately
Open the portal on your phone or computer. Even if you think the window is closed, confirm — sometimes the window has a few extra minutes or was extended slightly.
- 2
Login to your JoSAA account
Use your registered credentials. Check the choice filling section to see if the window shows any time remaining.
- 3
If window is still open — add choices and LOCK immediately
Add even 10–20 choices in any order and lock them. Having any locked choices is infinitely better than having none. You can always add more if time permits.
- 4
If window just closed — check if choices were saved
Review your dashboard to see if any choices were saved. Take a screenshot of your saved preferences as proof.
- 5
Contact JoSAA helpdesk
Email and call the JoSAA helpdesk (contact details at josaa.nic.in) to check your status. Explain your situation in writing. Ask specifically whether your saved choices will be considered.
Why This Almost Never Happens (And How to Prevent It)
JoSAA takes several steps to prevent candidates from missing the deadline:
- SMS and email reminders are sent to all registered candidates before the deadline.
- The choice filling window is typically 5–7 days long — not just 24 hours.
- JoSAA announcements are widely covered by news media and coaching institutes.
- The JoSAA portal shows the countdown timer clearly on the dashboard.
Key Lesson for 2026
Register on Day 1. Fill choices on Day 1. Lock on Day 1. Do not wait until Day 5 or 6. Portal traffic is highest on the deadline day — expect server slowness and timeouts. Locking early eliminates this risk entirely.
Alternative Options if You've Genuinely Missed JoSAA
CSAB 2026 (Central Seat Allocation Board)
CSAB fills vacant NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats after JoSAA rounds are complete. CSAB registration closed on August 3, 2026. Both special rounds are now complete: the SR1 (Special Round 1) result was declared on August 6, 2026, and the SR2 (Special Round 2) result was declared on August 12, 2026. Seats available via CSAB may be fewer and in less popular branches, but it is a legitimate second chance at central institutions.
CSAB 2026 GuideState Counselling Portals
State engineering counselling processes (KCET, WBJEE, MHT-CET, UPSEE, TNEAMCET, APEAPCET) operate independently of JoSAA. Many are still open in July. State government colleges and private colleges in these states accept admissions through state counselling. These often have very good colleges in the state.
Private College Counselling (VIT, Manipal, BITS)
Top private colleges like BITS Pilani (BITSAT), VIT (VITEEE), Manipal (MET), and SRM conduct their own counselling processes. BITS Pilani counselling and VIT admissions may still be ongoing. These are independent of JoSAA entirely.
