How to Order IIT and NIT Choices in JoSAA 2026
IIT vs NIT Ordering Strategy · Rank-wise Examples · Dual Degree Placement · Career-based Decision Framework
The Core Principle: Order by YOUR Preference, Not by Prestige
The JoSAA algorithm assigns you the highest-ranked choice in your list where your rank is within the closing rank for that seat. This means the ordering should reflect what you want most — not what society considers prestigious.
An IIT with a lower-preference branch should NOT automatically sit above an NIT top branchif you genuinely prefer the NIT option for career reasons. Society's ranking of institutions is not the same as your personal career-optimal ranking.
Key insight:The JoSAA choice list is your personal preference ranking. Choice 1 = what you want most. If you get it, you keep it. If not, the system tries Choice 2, then 3, and so on. Never put a "safer" option above your actual dream.
When IITs Should Come Before NITs in Your List
IIT brand genuinely matters for your career path
If you plan to pursue higher studies (M.Tech/PhD/MBA abroad), IIT brand adds measurably more value. Recruiters for non-CS core roles also prefer IIT credentials.
You are undecided about branch
When branch matters less to you than institution quality, IIT brand provides long-term flexibility across all career paths — consulting, finance, research, and core engineering.
Top 3 IITs — any branch
IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras have unparalleled brand value even for non-CS roles. Any branch at these three institutions justifiably sits above NIT CSE in most career scenarios.
You want research or PhD
Research infrastructure, faculty quality, and international collaborations at IITs (even newer ones) far exceed most NITs. If research is your goal, IIT always comes first.
When NITs Should Come Before Some IITs in Your List
NIT Trichy / Warangal CSE above newer IIT non-CS branches
If your goal is software placement, NIT Trichy CSE or NIT Warangal CSE outperforms IIT Goa Mechanical or IIT Jodhpur Civil in direct placement outcomes. Branch relevance matters for software careers.
Concrete example: software career path
NIT Trichy CSE > IIT Jodhpur Mechanical. A CSE degree from a strong NIT directly leads to software roles. A Mechanical degree from a newer IIT does not, despite the IIT label.
Home-state NIT with home-state quota advantage
If you have home-state (HS) quota at your state's NIT, the closing rank is often 5,000–15,000 ranks better than the OS (other state) quota. A HS-quota NIT seat may be significantly easier to get than an equivalent newer IIT seat.
Specific branch preference in a well-ranked NIT
If you have a clear branch preference (say, Electronics) and NIT Surathkal ECE is genuinely better placed for that career than IIT Mandi ECE, rank it higher. Programme quality and placement records matter.

The Dual Degree Ordering Question
JoSAA includes 5-year Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programmes alongside regular 4-year B.Tech options. Where should these go in your list?
Place Dual Degree ABOVE B.Tech if:
- You specifically want an integrated M.Tech
- You plan a research or academia career
- The M.Tech specialisation is your target field
- The IIT otherwise wouldn't be in your rank range for B.Tech
Place Dual Degree BELOW B.Tech if:
- You are unsure about a 5-year commitment
- You may want to switch after graduation
- You plan MBA/job directly after undergrad
- The 5th year M.Tech specialisation doesn't excite you
General rule: if you're uncertain, rank the 5-year Dual Degree below the corresponding 4-year B.Tech at the same IIT. The extra M.Tech is valuable, but the commitment is significant.
1Should I always put IITs above NITs in JoSAA choice list?
2Can I put NIT Trichy CSE above IIT Goa ECE in my choice list?
3What if I want IIT but am realistic about only getting NIT?
4Should category seats (OBC/SC/ST) come before or after general seats in the list?
5I want CSE at all costs. Should I put CSE at every IIT/NIT before anything else?
