Medical Fitness Certificate for JoSAA 2026 – Format & Requirements

Medical fitness certificate required for physical reporting at IIT/NIT/IIIT. Must be from a registered medical practitioner. Includes health status, vision, and fitness declaration.

Medical Fitness Certificate for JoSAA 2026 — Overview

A medical fitness certificate is required at the time of physical reporting at your JoSAA-allotted institute. It certifies that you are physically fit to undertake engineering studies. The certificate should be from a registered MBBS doctor or above, issued within the specified validity period before reporting.

Most IITs, NITs, and IIITs have a specific format for the medical fitness certificate available on their official websites. Download your institute's format in advance, fill it out with your doctor, and carry the original at the time of physical reporting. Some institutes perform their own medical examination on arrival — in which case, the external medical certificate serves as a preliminary document.

Medical Conditions and JoSAA Admission

Most medical conditions do not affect JoSAA admission. Colour blindness restricts some programs but not most engineering branches. Disabilities are addressed through PwD (Persons with Disability) reservation — separate from medical fitness. If you have a chronic condition (diabetes, asthma, etc.), disclose it in the certificate. The institute has medical facilities and will accommodate common conditions.

Eyesight: Candidates with corrected vision (glasses/contact lenses) are generally fit for all programs. The certificate should note your corrected vision. If you have severe visual impairment not correctable with glasses, a PwD certificate (visual impairment category) may be more appropriate than a standard medical fitness certificate.

Medical Fitness Certificate JoSAA 2026 – FAQs

Common questions about medical fitness certificate for JoSAA 2026

1
Who can issue a medical fitness certificate for JoSAA 2026?
A medical fitness certificate for JoSAA 2026 must be issued by a registered medical practitioner (MBBS or above) — typically a government doctor, civil surgeon, or authorised private doctor. Some institutes specify that the certificate must come from a government hospital or registered medical practitioner with their registration number on the certificate. Check your specific allotted institute's requirements as they may vary.
2
What must the medical fitness certificate include?
A medical fitness certificate for JoSAA/NIT/IIT admission must include: (1) Candidate's full name and date of birth. (2) Height and weight. (3) Vision details (colour blindness check for certain programs). (4) General health status — 'fit to undertake engineering studies'. (5) Doctor's name, qualification, and registration number. (6) Hospital/clinic stamp and date. (7) Doctor's signature. Some institutes may provide a specific format — check the allotted institute's website for their template.
3
Is colour blindness a disqualification for JEE/JoSAA admission?
Colour blindness disqualifies candidates from certain engineering programs that require colour discrimination — primarily Chemical Engineering, some Electrical Engineering labs, and specific research programs. For most programs including CSE, ECE (general), Mechanical, Civil, and Mathematics — colour blindness is NOT a disqualification. The medical fitness certificate should note any colour vision deficiency. The institute's medical committee decides on a case-by-case basis for borderline programs.
4
When should I get the medical fitness certificate?
Get your medical fitness certificate within 1–3 months of physical reporting (not too early as institutes may require a 'recent' certificate). A certificate dated 3–6 months before reporting is generally acceptable, but check your institute's specific guidelines. Get it from a government hospital or reputable private clinic. Ensure the doctor notes your current health status — if you have any chronic conditions, disclose them and get appropriate notes.
5
Is medical fitness certificate required for JoSAA online reporting?
For JoSAA online reporting (document upload on portal), the medical fitness certificate may or may not be required depending on the institute. Many institutes require it only at the time of physical reporting (in-person visit). However, having it ready before online reporting is advisable — some portals include it in the document upload checklist. Download your institute's specific online reporting checklist from josaa.nic.in or the institute website.
