Defense Services

JoSAA 2026 Defense Category (DS) – Rules, Seats & Eligibility

Supernumerary seats for children of defense personnel killed or disabled in action — a tribute to service through priority admissions at IITs and NITs.

What is DS Category in JoSAA?

The DS (Defense Services) category is a special provision in JoSAA that creates supernumerary seats at IITs and NITs for children of defense personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice — killed or permanently disabled while defending the nation. These seats are in addition to regular sanctioned intake and do not displace any other candidate.

The DS provision is one of the rarest and most special categories in JoSAA. Unlike general reservations (SC, OBC, EWS), DS is not a percentage-based quota — it is a fixed number of supernumerary seats per institute per branch, typically 1–2 seats. The number is determined by each institute's governing council in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines.

Eligible Service Branches

  • • Indian Army (all corps and regiments)
  • • Indian Navy (all branches)
  • • Indian Air Force (all branches)
  • • Paramilitary Forces (CRPF, BSF, ITBP, etc.) — check brochure
  • • Coast Guard — check brochure for inclusion

Qualifying Conditions for Parent

  • • Killed in action (war, border conflict)
  • • Died of injuries sustained in action
  • • 100% permanently disabled due to action injuries
  • • Died during peacetime service operations (varies by institute)

Certificate Requirements for DS Category

The certificate for DS category must come from military authority — not from civil government offices. Here is what each service requires:

Indian Army

Issuing Authority: Commanding Officer (CO) of the unit/regiment, or the respective Record Office (Regimental Centre)

Certificate must mention: Service details, nature of death/disability in action, relationship to candidate, official seal and CO signature

Indian Navy

Issuing Authority: Commanding Officer of the naval establishment, or INS records authority

Certificate must mention: Personnel's designation, ship/establishment name, action details, relationship confirmation

Indian Air Force

Issuing Authority: Station Commander or Air Force Records Office, Prayagraj

Certificate must mention: Rank, unit, nature of death/disability, date, relationship of candidate

Important: Bring Original + Attested Copies

The military certificate must be original (or officially attested). Bring the original death/disability certificate of the parent along with the DS category certificate. Photocopies without attestation are not accepted at reporting centers.

How DS Seats Appear in JoSAA Choice Filling

In JoSAA's choice filling interface, DS seats appear as a separate seat type labeled "DS" alongside the institute and branch. You will see choices like:

IIT Bombay | Computer Science | DS | Open

IIT Bombay | Computer Science | DS | OBC-NCL

NIT Trichy | CSE | DS | Open

NIT Trichy | CSE | DS | OBC-NCL

DS is a separate seat type (horizontal), so it combines with your vertical category. An OBC-NCL DS candidate will see DS-OBC-NCL seats in the choice list. Add DS category choices at higher preference numbers, followed by your regular category choices below.

DS Choice Filling Strategy

  1. Add DS category choices at top priority for your aspirational institutes
  2. Cover multiple institutes and branches under DS — the competition is low
  3. Add regular category (non-DS) choices below as fallbacks
  4. If DS seats at an institute are unfilled, they may convert to regular seats — check rules in JoSAA brochure

DS Closing Ranks vs Open Category

Because DS seats are small in number and very few candidates qualify, DS closing ranks are often relaxed compared to Open category. At popular institutes, DS seats sometimes go unfilled even after Round 5. When they do fill, the closing rank reflects only the last DS candidate who chose that option — not the general competitive pool.

InstituteBranchOpen CR (approx)DS Seats

* DS closing ranks are not published separately in most years because few candidates use this category. Verify actual DS closing ranks in JoSAA 2025 data on josaa.nic.in when planning choices.

Open guide
1
Who is eligible for DS (Defense Services) category in JoSAA?
DS category (also called CW — Children of War Widows/Defense — in some contexts) is available to children of defense personnel who: (1) Were killed in action during war or border skirmishes, (2) Died due to injuries sustained in action, (3) Were permanently disabled in action (classified as 100% disability from action injuries), (4) Died while in service under specific operational conditions. The candidate must be a direct child (son or daughter) of the qualifying defense personnel. Grandchildren, stepchildren, and adopted children may have specific provisions — check the JoSAA 2026 brochure.
2
What is the certificate required for DS category in JoSAA?
The DS category certificate must be issued by a competent military authority. For Army personnel: from the Commanding Officer (CO) or Record Office of the respective Army unit/regiment. For Navy: from the Commanding Officer of the naval establishment. For Air Force: from the Station Commander or Air Force Records Office. The certificate must clearly state: the personnel's name, rank, regiment/unit, nature of death/disability (in action or peacetime service), date of incident, and the candidate's relationship to the personnel. Additionally, a death certificate or disability certificate of the parent must be attached.
3
Are DS supernumerary seats over and above regular sanctioned intake?
Yes, DS seats are supernumerary — created over and above the regular sanctioned intake at IITs and NITs. This means admitting a DS candidate does not displace any regular candidate. The number of DS seats is typically 1–2 per branch per institute. In JoSAA's seat matrix, DS seats appear separately labeled. Since very few candidates qualify, competition is extremely low, and DS category closing ranks are often equivalent to the last qualifying rank in the DS pool — which can be quite high (relaxed).
4
Does DS category apply to children of ex-servicemen or peacetime service deaths?
The original DS provision covers personnel killed/disabled in action. However, some institutes have extended provisions for children of ex-servicemen who died during peacetime service under specific conditions. The exact eligibility varies by institute and may have evolved over the years. Check the JoSAA 2026 Information Brochure for the precise definition used in that year's counselling. In general, pure ex-servicemen (retired from service without action death/disability) do not qualify for DS seats — their children compete under regular categories.
5
How do DS category closing ranks compare to Open category?
DS category closing ranks are generally significantly higher (worse) than Open category, because the number of DS seats is tiny (1–2 per branch) and very few candidates qualify. In practice, if fewer DS candidates apply than there are DS seats, even higher rank candidates may get allotted. However, if the DS pool has more candidates than seats, competition happens within that pool. In many years and at many institutes, DS seats go unfilled even after all rounds, meaning the cutoff is effectively the qualifying rank of the last DS candidate who chose that institute.
