Why Use CRL Rank for College Prediction

JEE Main 2026 rank card from NTA shows your CRL (Common Rank List) rank along with category-specific ranks. CRL rank is your all-India standing among all qualified candidates and is the primary number used in JoSAA counselling for General (UR) and EWS seats.

Using rank directly (rather than converting from percentile) gives the most precise prediction because it matches exactly against JoSAA's allotment logic. Every seat in every NIT/IIIT/GFTI has a CRL opening rank and closing rank published by JoSAA.

  • Enter your CRL rank from NTA rank card — no conversion needed
  • Select your category for reserved seat prediction (OBC/SC/ST/EWS)
  • Choose home state to activate HS quota seat matching
  • Compare against 2025 R6 data to classify each option as Safe/Moderate/Ambitious

Home State Quota Advantage by Rank

At NITs, 50% of seats are Home State (HS) quota and 50% are Other State (OS) quota. Home State candidates compete in a smaller pool, making HS seats significantly easier to secure than OS seats at the same institute.

Example: NIT Karnataka (Surathkal) CSE — OS closing rank in 2025 was ~2,500; HS closing rank was ~5,500. A Karnataka student with rank 5,000 can get NIT Surathkal CSE via HS quota, while the same rank would not qualify for OS quota. Use the predictor to correctly apply your home state advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about using JEE Main rank for college prediction

1
What rank do I need for NIT CSE in 2026?
Based on JoSAA 2025 Round 6 data: NIT Trichy CSE (General-OS) ~1,400; NIT Warangal CSE ~2,100; NIT Surathkal CSE ~2,500; NIT Calicut CSE ~3,800; MNIT Jaipur CSE ~5,900; NIT Rourkela CSE ~5,200; NIT Kurukshetra CSE ~9,500; NIT Silchar CSE ~15,000; NIT Agartala CSE ~22,000. Home State quota is usually 10–20% more competitive than Other State at respective NITs.
2
How is JEE Main CRL rank different from category rank?
CRL (Common Rank List) is your all-India rank among all candidates. Category rank (OBC-NCL rank, SC rank, ST rank, EWS rank) is your rank within your reserved category. JoSAA uses CRL rank for General and EWS seats and category rank for OBC-NCL, SC, and ST reserved seats. Always enter your CRL rank in the predictor and select your category separately.
3
My JEE Main 2026 rank is 50,000. What colleges can I get?
At rank 50,000 (General-OS), based on JoSAA 2025 data: NIT Silchar ECE (~45,000 — moderate), NIT Agartala CSE (~22,000 — ambitious), IIEST Shibpur ECE (~48,000 — safe), NIT Meghalaya ECE (~55,000 — safe), IIIT Una CSE (~52,000 — safe), GFTI options like SPA Delhi or HBTU Kanpur. Use the predictor for a full personalised list including Home State quota advantage.
4
Can I predict college for both HS and OS quota with the same rank?
Yes. The predictor shows both Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) options. HS quota at your home-state NIT is a significant advantage — for example, at NIT Karnataka Surathkal, Karnataka students have HS quota access, and the HS closing rank is typically 2–5x less competitive than OS. The tool automatically applies your home state selection to show correct quota options.
5
Are JoSAA Round 1 ranks or Round 6 ranks more useful for prediction?
Round 6 (final round) closing ranks are the definitive, most conservative cutoffs of the year. Round 1 ranks are the most lenient — they represent initial allocations before upgrades. For realistic planning and predicting your likely final allotment, always use Round 6 data. Our predictor uses exclusively JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks.
