Percentile to College – How the Prediction Works

JEE Main 2026 results are published as percentile scores, not raw marks. NTA normalises scores across sessions using percentile to create the final Common Rank List (CRL). The college predictor accepts percentile directly and converts it to an estimated rank using:

Rank = (1 − Percentile ÷ 100) × 14,00,000

This rank is then matched against JoSAA 2025 Round 6 closing ranks for every branch and category combination across all 90+ NIT/IIIT/GFTI institutions. The tool displays results in three tiers:

  • Safe (green): Your rank is well below the 2025 closing rank — admission very likely.
  • Moderate (amber): Your rank is close to 2025 closing rank — admission possible with seat availability.
  • Ambitious (red): Your rank is above the 2025 closing rank — aspirational choice; may open in later rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about predicting colleges by JEE Main percentile

1
How is JEE Main percentile converted to rank for college prediction?
The formula is: Rank = (1 − Percentile/100) × Total Candidates. For JEE Main 2026 with an estimated 14 lakh candidates: 99 percentile → ~14,000 rank; 97 percentile → ~42,000; 95 percentile → ~70,000; 90 percentile → ~1,40,000. The predictor handles this conversion automatically — you just enter your percentile.
2
What is the minimum percentile needed for an NIT seat in 2026?
For General category, an NIT seat (any branch at any NIT) typically requires at least 85–87 percentile (~2,10,000–1,82,000 rank). For CSE at a top NIT, you need 99+ percentile. OBC-NCL candidates can get NIT seats with 80–82 percentile due to category rank advantages. SC/ST candidates can qualify at lower percentiles.
3
My percentile is 98.5 — which colleges can I predict?
At 98.5 percentile (~21,000 rank), you can realistically target: NIT Calicut ECE (General-OS), NIT Rourkela CSE (General-OS, ~closing 5,200 — ambitious), MNIT Allahabad CSE (~7,500 — safe), NIT Kurukshetra CSE (~9,500 — safe), IIIT Allahabad IT (~6,500 — moderate). Use the predictor for a full category and home-state adjusted list.
4
Does the predictor work if I only know my Session 1 percentile?
Yes. If JEE Main 2026 Session 2 results are not yet out, your Session 1 percentile gives a reasonable estimate. Enter your best available percentile. When Session 2 results are published, NTA uses the best of both session percentiles for the final rank — rerun the predictor with your final percentile for maximum accuracy.
5
Is percentile-based prediction more accurate than rank-based prediction?
Both use the same underlying data — percentile is simply converted to rank first. However, percentile-based prediction introduces slight variability because the conversion depends on estimated total candidates (14 lakh for 2026). If you have your official CRL rank from the NTA rank card, use it directly for the most accurate prediction.
