Safe Score for NIT Admission in JEE Main 2026

Tier-wise safe score guide — 200+ for top NIT CSE, 150+ for mid NITs, 100+ for NE NITs

What Score is Safe for NIT Admission?

The "safe score" for NIT admission in JEE Main depends on which NIT and which branch you are targeting. JEE Main 2026 results are available; JoSAA 2026 counselling begins June 2. Here is a comprehensive tier-by-tier breakdown.

Tier 1 NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut) — CSE: Safe score is 220-240 marks (99.2-99.5 percentile). These are the most competitive NITs with closing ranks in the 3000-8000 range for General category AI quota. Home state candidates in TN/Telangana/Karnataka/Kerala need slightly less (~200-220 marks).

Tier 2 NITs (Rourkela, Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Silchar, Patna) — CSE: Safe score is 180-210 marks (98-99 percentile). Closing ranks for these NITs in CSE via AI quota are typically 18000-25000 for General category.

NE-NITs (Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh) — CSE: Safe score is 120-150 marks (95-97 percentile). Closing ranks for NE-NIT CSE range from 25000-55000 in Round 5 via AI quota. These are excellent value for money with government-funded education.

For any NIT (any branch): A score of 100-120 marks (93-95 percentile) gives access to at least some NE-NIT branch via CSAB special rounds. Below 100 marks, NIT options become extremely limited even for non-CSE branches at NE-NITs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about safe score for NIT in JEE Main 2026

1
What is the safe score for NIT CSE in JEE Main 2026?
For top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) CSE, a safe score is 220-240 marks (99+ percentile). For mid-tier NITs (Kurukshetra, Silchar, Patna) CSE, 180-200 marks (98-99 percentile) is safe. For NE NITs CSE, 130-150 marks (96-97 percentile) is generally safe.
2
What is the safe score for any NIT admission in JEE Main?
To guarantee admission to at least some NIT branch (not necessarily CSE), a score of 120-130 marks (95-96 percentile) is usually sufficient for NE-NIT non-core branches. For a broader range of NITs, 150+ marks (97+ percentile) provides a strong safety net.
3
Does category affect the safe score for NIT?
Yes, significantly. For OBC-NCL, the effective safe score is roughly 60-70% of the General category safe score. For SC category, NIT Trichy CSE can be accessed around 130-140 marks. For ST, around 100-110 marks can fetch top NIT CSE.
4
Is 150 marks enough for NIT in JEE Main 2026?
150 marks in JEE Main (~97 percentile) is safe for NE-NITs CSE and mid-tier NIT non-CSE branches. For mid-tier NITs CSE (Kurukshetra, Silchar), 150 marks is borderline — you may or may not get depending on the competition that year.
5
What score is needed for NIT Trichy CSE in JEE Main 2026?
NIT Trichy CSE via JoSAA AI quota typically requires 220-240 marks (99.2-99.4 percentile) for General category. Home State (Tamil Nadu) quota for NIT Trichy CSE requires slightly less — around 200-220 marks.
