How OBC Reservation Works in JoSAA

OBC-NCL candidates receive 27% reservation in all centrally funded technical institutions. In JoSAA 2026, this means that out of every 100 seats in a branch at an NIT, 27 are allocated to OBC-NCL candidates based on OBC category rank.

Understanding Your Category Rank: JEE Main 2026 results show both your All India Rank (AIR) and your OBC category rank. For admission purposes, JoSAA uses your OBC category rank to compare against OBC-NCL closing ranks of previous years.

OBC vs General Cutoff Comparison: OBC-NCL closing ranks are typically 2–3x the general closing rank for the same program. For example, NIT Trichy CSE (other state) general closing rank ~600; OBC-NCL closing rank ~1400–1800. This means an OBC candidate with OBC rank 1500 can get NIT Trichy CSE where a general candidate would need a general rank of ~600.

Home State + OBC Combination: If you're from the home state of an NIT AND have OBC-NCL status, you benefit from both home state quota AND OBC reservation. This significantly lowers the required category rank. Always check home state OBC closing ranks separately in the JoSAA data.

OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer) candidates get 27% reservation in all centrally funded institutions including NITs, IITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This means 27% of total seats in each branch at each NIT are reserved for OBC-NCL candidates and filled based on OBC category rank.

How does OBC category rank differ from general rank in JEE Main?
Every JEE Main candidate gets two ranks: an All India Rank (AIR) and a category rank. Your OBC category rank is your rank among all OBC-NCL candidates only. Typically, your OBC category rank is roughly 2–2.5 times lower (better) than your general AIR. For example, a general AIR of 10000 might translate to an OBC rank of around 3500–4500.

What NIT colleges can OBC candidates get with OBC rank 5000?
An OBC rank of 5000 is equivalent to roughly a general rank of 12000–15000. With this OBC rank, candidates can target NIT Trichy ECE, NIT Calicut CSE, NIT Rourkela CSE through OBC quota. The OBC cutoffs at these NITs for their most popular branches close around OBC rank 3000–7000.

How do I verify my OBC-NCL status for JoSAA?
You must hold a valid OBC-NCL certificate from a competent authority (usually the SDM or equivalent in your state). The certificate must certify that your family's income is below the creamy layer limit (currently Rs 8 lakh per annum from non-government sources). The certificate must be current — typically issued within the past year.

Can I use state OBC certificate for central institutes (NITs)?
For central government institutions (NITs, IITs, IIITs), the OBC status is determined by the Central OBC list, not state OBC list. Your caste must appear in the Central Government's OBC list. Some castes are in state OBC lists but not the Central list — in such cases, you cannot claim OBC reservation at NITs. Verify your caste in the Central OBC list on the Ministry of Social Justice website.
