CSAB 2026 — Overview and Key Facts

CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is the body that conducts special counselling rounds for the NIT+ system after JoSAA concludes. In 2026, CSAB runs 2 special rounds in August. These rounds are your second opportunity to get admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs if you missed out in JoSAA or want to upgrade your allotment.

Key CSAB 2026 facts: Seat acceptance fee ₹30,000 (General/EWS/OBC) and ₹15,000 (SC/ST/PwD). Separate registration required on csab.nic.in. CSAB also runs NEUT (North Eastern and Union Territory) special rounds. Seats across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs typically become available in CSAB, largely in non-CS branches at NITs.

CSAB 2026 Strategy — How to Use It Effectively

CSAB strategy for 2026: (1) Always register for CSAB after JoSAA Round 5 ends — even if you have a JoSAA seat. (2) In CSAB, fill choices that are strictly better than your JoSAA allotment. (3) CSAB typically has better options than JoSAA later rounds because candidates who dropped out create new vacancies. (4) Focus on CSAB NEUT rounds if you are from a North Eastern state or Union Territory — these have significantly relaxed criteria.

Common mistake to avoid: Surrendering a good JoSAA seat thinking CSAB will give a better option. Use CSAB as an upgrade opportunity — participate without surrendering your existing JoSAA seat until CSAB confirms a better allotment. Use our college predictor to identify which CSAB choices are realistic upgrades.

JEE Main CSAB 2026 – FAQs

Common questions about CSAB counselling after JoSAA

1
What is CSAB and how is it different from JoSAA?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds after JoSAA concludes. JoSAA has 5 main rounds (June–July, ending July 16, 2026) while CSAB has 2 special rounds (August). Both handle the same NIT+ system colleges (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs). CSAB fills seats that remain vacant after JoSAA Round 5. CSAB 2026 registration closed August 3, 2026. Both special rounds are now complete: the SR1 (Special Round 1) result was declared August 6, 2026 (reporting Aug 6–11), and the SR2 (Special Round 2) result was declared August 12, 2026 (reporting Aug 12–17). Participation in CSAB requires separate registration even if you participated in JoSAA.
2
Who is eligible for CSAB 2026?
CSAB 2026 eligibility: Any candidate who has qualified JEE Main 2026 (obtained a valid JEE Main rank/percentile) and meets NIT/IIIT/GFTI minimum eligibility criteria (75% in Class 12 for General/OBC or 65% for SC/ST/PwD, or be in top 20 percentile of their state board). Candidates who participated in JoSAA and those who did not participate are both eligible for CSAB. There is no age or attempt restriction specific to CSAB.
3
What seats are available in CSAB 2026?
CSAB 2026 special rounds fill remaining vacant seats in: 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 32 GFTIs participating in the JoSAA system. CSAB also has NEUT (North Eastern and Union Territory) rounds with relaxed eligibility for students from NE states and Union Territories. Typically, seats in less popular branches (Civil, Metallurgy, Mining, Chemical) at various NITs remain and get filled in CSAB. CSE seats at top NITs rarely appear in CSAB — those typically fill in JoSAA Rounds 1–3.
4
What is the seat acceptance fee for CSAB 2026?
CSAB 2026 seat acceptance fee is ₹30,000 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates and ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. This fee is paid online during CSAB seat acceptance and is adjustable against the first semester fee. If you withdraw from CSAB after accepting a seat, refund policies apply similar to JoSAA — partial or no refund depending on the stage of withdrawal.
5
Can I participate in CSAB if I already have a JoSAA seat?
Yes. You can participate in CSAB even if you have a JoSAA seat. In CSAB, you can choose to upgrade your existing JoSAA seat to a better option. However, if you accept a CSAB seat better than your JoSAA seat, you surrender the JoSAA seat. If CSAB doesn't give you a better option, you can retain your JoSAA allotment. This effectively gives candidates two more rounds (beyond JoSAA Round 5) to upgrade their college/branch.
