Which is Better for You?

Choose JoSAA if you have a JEE Advanced rank and want IIT admission, or if you want to compete for the widest possible set of NIT/IIIT options with the most seats available.

Choose CSAB if you did not get a satisfactory seat in JoSAA and want another shot at NITs/IIITs with potentially relaxed cutoffs. CSAB is also useful if you missed JoSAA registration entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB vs JoSAA 2026

Common queries about the differences between CSAB and JoSAA 2026

1
Can I apply for both JoSAA 2026 and CSAB 2026?
You can participate in JoSAA 2026 first and then, if unsatisfied with the result, withdraw and apply for CSAB 2026. However, you cannot hold seats in both simultaneously. JoSAA runs first (June–July); CSAB special rounds come after JoSAA ends.
2
Does CSAB 2026 include IITs?
No. CSAB only covers NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. IITs and ISM Dhanbad are exclusively part of JoSAA. If you want admission to an IIT, JoSAA is the only route.
3
Are CSAB cutoffs lower than JoSAA cutoffs?
Generally yes. CSAB operates on leftover seats after all 6 JoSAA rounds. Since many top-rank candidates have already been placed in JoSAA, the effective competition for CSAB is lower. Historical data shows CSAB closing ranks are typically 5–15% higher (relaxed) than JoSAA Round 5 closing ranks.
4
How many rounds does CSAB 2026 have?
CSAB typically runs 2 Special Rounds (SR1 and SR2). Each round follows the same choice-filling, lock-in, allotment, and reporting sequence as JoSAA rounds but on a compressed 5–7 day per round timeline.
5
Is CSAB registration separate from JoSAA registration?
Yes. Even if you registered for JoSAA 2026, you must register separately on csab.nic.in for CSAB 2026. The registration window for CSAB typically opens a few days after JoSAA Round 5 allotment.
