JEE Advanced 2026 Foreign Nationals Quota

Eligibility, supernumerary seats, and the separate admission process for Foreign Nationals, OCI and PIO candidates at IITs

What is the Foreign Nationals Quota?

IITs admit a limited number of Foreign National, OCI, and PIO candidates every year through a supernumerary quota — seats created in addition to the regular intake, so they don't reduce the number of JEE Advanced seats available to Indian candidates through JoSAA.

Unlike the main JEE Advanced admission pathway, Foreign National candidates typically do not need to appear for JEE Advanced at all. Instead, their eligibility and merit are assessed on Class 12 (or equivalent international qualification) academic performance, following criteria announced separately each year by the JEE Advanced authorities/IITs.

Category Breakdown

CategoryDefinitionNeeds JEE Advanced?
Foreign NationalCitizen of a country other than IndiaNo — separate academic-merit process
OCI (Overseas Citizen of India)Overseas Citizen of India cardholderTypically no, per OCI-specific provisions
PIO (Person of Indian Origin)Person of Indian origin, holding foreign citizenshipTypically no, per PIO-specific provisions
Indian citizen residing abroad (NRI)Indian citizen living outside IndiaYes — must appear for JEE Advanced like any Indian candidate

* Always verify exact category definitions and current-year provisions on the official JEE Advanced/IIT admission notification, as rules can be revised.

Key Things to Know

Since Foreign National admissions are on supernumerary seats, they run on a parallel track to JoSAA and do not compete with or affect the category-wise cutoff trends seen in regular JoSAA counselling. If you're an Indian citizen living abroad (NRI), note that you do not qualify under this quota — you must appear for regular JEE Advanced like any other Indian candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions – Foreign Nationals Quota

Common questions about Foreign National, OCI and PIO admission to IITs

1
Who qualifies as a 'Foreign National' for JEE Advanced 2026 admission?
A candidate qualifies as a Foreign National if they hold citizenship of a country other than India and have not studied under the Indian reservation categories. This is distinct from OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) cardholders, who are governed by their own specific eligibility clauses, though all three groups are typically bundled under the broader 'DASA/Foreign National' admission route for IITs.
2
Do Foreign Nationals need to appear for JEE Advanced?
No. Foreign Nationals seeking admission to IITs through the supernumerary quota are generally NOT required to appear for JEE Advanced. Instead, they are evaluated based on Class 12 (or equivalent) academic performance and other criteria specified separately for the Foreign National category, as notified by the JEE Advanced admission authorities each year.
3
Are Foreign National seats counted within the regular IIT seat matrix?
No. Foreign National admissions are offered on supernumerary seats — additional seats created over and above the regular sanctioned intake — meaning they do not reduce the number of seats available to JEE Advanced-qualified Indian candidates through JoSAA.
4
What is the difference between the Foreign National quota and DASA?
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a separate scheme primarily for NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs, based on SAT or Class 12 scores, administered by NIT Surathkal. The IIT Foreign National quota is a distinct, IIT-specific supernumerary admission route with its own eligibility and application process, not part of DASA.
5
Can an Indian citizen living abroad apply under the Foreign National quota?
No. Indian citizens, regardless of where they currently reside, are not eligible for the Foreign National quota — they must apply through regular JEE Advanced/JoSAA. Only non-Indian citizens (and separately, OCI/PIO cardholders under their specific provisions) can be considered under this quota.
6
How many seats are typically reserved under the Foreign National quota at each IIT?
The number of supernumerary Foreign National seats varies by IIT and branch, and is notified separately each year — it is typically a small number per branch (often in the low single digits per IIT). Check the official JEE Advanced/IIT admission notification for the exact current-year seat count at each institute.
