CSAB 2026 vs JoSAA Withdrawal – Key Differences

Overview: Why Withdrawal Policy Matters
Many students participate in both JoSAA and CSAB counselling, using one as primary and the other as backup. Understanding the withdrawal mechanics of both processes is essential to navigate this strategy correctly — a wrong move can cost you thousands of rupees in lost fees or, worse, make you ineligible for the backup process.
The key principle is: whether you withdraw from JoSAA before or after physical reporting determines your CSAB eligibility. Similarly, how and when you withdraw from CSAB determines what refund (if any) you receive.
How JoSAA Withdrawal Works
In JoSAA, after receiving a seat allotment in any round, you have the option to withdraw from the process. Here is what happens:
JoSAA Withdrawal Before Physical Reporting
- Done online via josaa.nic.in → Withdrawal section
- Seat acceptance fee (paid earlier) is forfeited — not returned
- You lose your JoSAA allotted seat permanently
- You are eligible for CSAB 2026 (you can register and participate)
- You receive a withdrawal acknowledgement — save this as proof
JoSAA — After Physically Reporting to Institute
- Once you physically report and complete admission at a JoSAA institute, you are considered joined
- You are NOT eligible for CSAB 2026 as a fresh unallotted candidate
- The admission is essentially final (you may withdraw from the institute separately, but that is a college-level process, not JoSAA)
JoSAA — If Not Allotted at All
If you participated in JoSAA but never received any allotment across all 5 rounds, you are fully eligible for CSAB without any withdrawal step needed. You simply register for CSAB when it opens.
How CSAB Withdrawal Works
CSAB has its own withdrawal policy, separate from JoSAA. The mechanics are similar but the deadlines and refund policy may differ:
CSAB Withdrawal Before Physical Reporting
- Done online via csab.nic.in → Withdrawal section within the withdrawal window
- Seat acceptance fee may be partially refunded (processing charges deducted) — see refund table below
- You lose your CSAB allotted seat
- Eligibility for the next CSAB round (SR2 or NEUT) depends on the specific CSAB 2026 rules — check official notification
CSAB Withdrawal After Physical Reporting
- If you reported to the CSAB institute, it is treated as final admission
- Seat acceptance fee is forfeited (not refunded)
- Withdrawal at this stage is a college-level process — check with the specific institute
Not Reporting (Without Formal Withdrawal)
- Simply not showing up without withdrawing online is treated as a no-show withdrawal
- Seat acceptance fee is typically completely forfeited with no refund
- Always formally withdraw through the portal rather than just not showing up

| Aspect | JoSAA Withdrawal | CSAB Withdrawal |

| When withdrawal is available | After allotment in any round, before physical reporting | After seat allotment, before reporting window closes |
| Fee forfeited | Full seat acceptance fee (~₹35,000 General) | Full or partial fee (depends on CSAB 2026 refund policy) |
| CSAB 2026 eligibility after withdrawal | YES — eligible for CSAB if withdrew before reporting | Depends on round; check CSAB 2026 notification |
| Proof of withdrawal | Withdrawal acknowledgement from josaa.nic.in | Withdrawal confirmation from csab.nic.in |
| After physical reporting | NOT eligible for CSAB as fresh candidate | Treated as final admission; institute-level withdrawal only |
Can You Do Both JoSAA and CSAB — Then Withdraw?
A common question: "I accepted a JoSAA seat and also registered for CSAB. Can I compare both allotments and then withdraw from one?"
The answer depends on the sequencing. JoSAA ends before CSAB begins:
Strategy: Accept JoSAA seat → Withdraw before reporting → Do CSAB
Valid — you pay and forfeit the JoSAA seat acceptance fee (~₹35,000) but remain eligible for CSAB. Net cost: ₹35,000 in lost fee.
Strategy: Accept JoSAA, report to college, then also do CSAB
NOT valid — after physically reporting to a JoSAA institute, you are not eligible for CSAB as a fresh unallotted candidate. Don't try this.
Strategy: JoSAA allotment not received → Directly register for CSAB
Valid — no withdrawal step needed. If you never received any JoSAA allotment, simply register for CSAB. No fee loss.
