CSAB 2026

CSAB vs DASA – Can NRI/OCI Students Use CSAB Special Round?

CSAB needs a JEE Main rank to fill vacant NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats. DASA needs SAT scores instead and runs as a separate scheme for NRI/OCI/PIO candidates. Here's why they don't overlap.

Overview: Two Separate Systems, No Overlap

CSAB and DASA are both routes into NITs and IIITs, but they serve completely different candidate pools with different admission criteria. A candidate eligible for one is not automatically eligible for the other.

CSAB

For: JEE Main rank holders who missed/left a JoSAA seat

Selection: JEE Main rank (mandatory)

Institutes: NITs + IIITs + GFTIs (NOT IITs)

Fee: Regular government fee

DASA

For: NRI, OCI, PIO candidates without JEE scores

Selection: SAT scores

Institutes: NITs + IIITs + CFTIs (NOT IITs)

Fee: Higher NRI/DASA fee (3–5× regular)

Which Route Should You Use? (Decision Guide)

NRI/OCI student who appeared for JEE Main and has a usable rank

Go through JoSAA first, and CSAB Special Round if you don't get a seat (or want to upgrade) in JoSAA. This gets you regular government fees and access to the full NIT/IIIT/GFTI seat matrix — better value than DASA in almost every case.

Recommended: JoSAA → CSAB

NRI/OCI/PIO student who did NOT appear for JEE Main

CSAB is not an option since it requires a JEE Main rank. Use DASA instead, based on SAT scores. Apply at dasanit.org within the DASA-specific timeline, which is separate from JoSAA/CSAB dates.

Recommended: DASA

DASA candidate who didn't get a good enough SAT-based seat in DASA rounds

There is no fallback into CSAB unless you separately hold a valid JEE Main rank. DASA and CSAB seat pools and eligibility criteria don't cross over — check DASA's own later rounds/spot rounds instead.

Recommended: DASA later rounds

Student unsure whether to prepare for JEE or apply via DASA

If you're an Indian resident (not NRI/OCI/PIO), DASA isn't available to you at all — JEE Main is mandatory. If you do qualify as NRI/OCI/PIO, appearing for JEE Main (where permitted from abroad) and keeping JoSAA/CSAB as the primary route is usually the stronger financial and academic choice.

Recommended: Depends on eligibility

Key Points to Remember

  • A JEE Main rank is non-negotiable for CSAB — there is no SAT-based or alternate entry path into CSAB Special Round, regardless of NRI/OCI/PIO status.
  • The seat pools don't compete — CSAB fills vacated JoSAA seats, DASA uses separately reserved supernumerary seats. One filling up doesn't affect the other's availability.
  • IITs are outside both CSAB and DASA — CSAB only covers NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, and DASA only covers NITs/IIITs/CFTIs. IIT admission for NRI candidates follows a separate IIT-specific process, if available.
  • If you qualify for both, CSAB is usually cheaper — regular JoSAA/CSAB fees are a fraction of DASA's NRI fee structure, so use your JEE Main rank via JoSAA/CSAB whenever you have one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CSAB vs DASA for NRI and foreign candidates

1
Can a DASA candidate apply to CSAB Special Round?
No. CSAB Special Round admits candidates strictly on the basis of a valid JEE Main rank (or JEE Advanced rank for the few DASA-ineligible IIT seats, which CSAB doesn't cover anyway). DASA candidates are selected using SAT scores and typically do not have a JEE Main rank, so they aren't eligible to register for CSAB. If a DASA-eligible NRI/OCI/PIO student has also appeared for JEE Main and holds a valid rank, they could use that rank for CSAB like any other candidate — but that would mean going through JoSAA/CSAB as a regular JEE candidate, not through the DASA quota.
2
What is the core difference between CSAB and DASA?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) is the special round that fills vacant NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats left over after JoSAA using JEE Main ranks. DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a completely separate scheme for NRI, OCI, and PIO candidates who use SAT scores instead of JEE ranks. They run on different eligibility criteria, different seat pools (CSAB = vacated JoSAA seats; DASA = supernumerary seats), and are administered separately — csab.nic.in for CSAB, dasanit.org for DASA.
3
Do CSAB and DASA compete for the same seats?
No. DASA seats are supernumerary — they exist in addition to the regular sanctioned intake, and are earmarked exclusively for NRI/OCI/PIO candidates. CSAB seats come from the regular JoSAA-sanctioned pool (seats vacated when JoSAA allottees didn't report) plus NEUT supernumerary seats for North-East/UT candidates. Since the seat pools don't overlap, CSAB filling more seats does not reduce DASA seat availability, and vice versa.
4
If I'm an NRI with a JEE Main rank, should I use CSAB or DASA?
If you have a valid, competitive JEE Main rank, using JoSAA/CSAB as a regular candidate is usually better — you pay regular government fees instead of the much higher DASA/NRI fee structure, and you're not limited to DASA's supernumerary seat count. DASA only makes sense if you don't have a usable JEE Main rank and are relying on SAT scores instead.
5
Does CSAB have any special seats for NRI or foreign candidates?
CSAB itself doesn't have an NRI-specific seat category — its only supernumerary category is NEUT (North Eastern & UT candidates), which is unrelated to NRI/OCI/PIO status. NRI-specific admission at NITs and IIITs goes exclusively through DASA, not CSAB.
