JoSAA vs DASA – What's the Difference for NRI and Foreign Candidates?

JoSAA is for Indian residents with JEE ranks. DASA is for NRI/OCI/PIO candidates without JEE — using SAT scores instead, with higher fees and fewer seats.

Overview: Two Different Routes, Two Different Populations

JoSAA and DASA are both centralised admission systems for engineering colleges in India — but they serve entirely different populations and operate on different criteria. Understanding which applies to you is the first critical step.

JoSAA

For: Indian citizens and residents who have appeared in JEE Main/Advanced

Selection: JEE rank (merit-based)

Institutes: All IITs + NITs + IIITs + GFTIs

Fee: Regular government fee

DASA

For: NRI, OCI, PIO candidates without JEE scores

Selection: SAT scores

Institutes: NITs + IIITs + CFTIs (NOT IITs)

Fee: Higher NRI/DASA fee (3–5× regular)

DASA Eligibility Requirements

Nationality / Residency

NRI: Indian citizen residing abroad for employment/business. OCI: Overseas Citizen of India cardholder. PIO: Person of Indian Origin (includes foreign nationals of Indian origin up to 4 generations back).

Educational Qualification

Passed Class 12 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Minimum 60% marks (or equivalent grade) in PCM subjects. Some institutes may require higher percentages.

SAT Score

Minimum SAT score as specified in the DASA bulletin for the year. Candidates with higher SAT scores get priority in seat allocation. Verify minimum score cutoffs on the official DASA portal each year.

Age Limit

Generally no age limit for DASA admissions, unlike IIT admissions through JEE Advanced which has a 25-year age cap for General/OBC candidates.

Not Already Enrolled

Candidates already enrolled in a degree programme at an Indian institution are not eligible for DASA fresh admissions.

Important: DASA eligibility criteria, SAT score requirements, and participating institutes are reviewed and updated every year. Always refer to the official DASA notification published at dasanit.org or the NIT Council website for 2026-specific requirements.

Which Route Should You Use? (Decision Guide)

NRI student who appeared in JEE Main/Advanced

If JEE rank is good enough, use JoSAA — you'll pay regular (lower) fees and have more institute options including IITs (via JEE Advanced). DASA fees are significantly higher.

Recommended: JoSAA

NRI/OCI student who did not appear for JEE

DASA is the designated route. Apply through dasanit.org. Prepare SAT scores in advance. DASA seats at top NITs for popular branches are competitive — high SAT scores improve your chances.

Recommended: DASA

Indian citizen studying abroad who plans to return

If you can appear for JEE Main from abroad (NTA permits this from select centres), get a JEE rank and use JoSAA for regular fee admissions. If that's not feasible, DASA is the alternative.

Recommended: JEE Main + JoSAA if possible

Foreign national (non-Indian) seeking engineering education in India

DASA does not cover non-Indian nationals without OCI/PIO status. Explore direct institute admissions for foreign nationals — most central institutes have a Direct Admissions for Foreign Nationals (DAFF) scheme or similar.

Recommended: Direct Institute Admission / DAFF

Key Points NRI/OCI Students Often Miss

  • DASA fees are significantly higher — budget for 3–5× regular NIT fees per year. This is a major financial consideration compared to JoSAA regular route.
  • DASA seats are supernumerary — they are seats added above the regular sanctioned strength, not competing with general merit seats. This means DASA does not displace JEE-qualified Indian residents.
  • IITs are NOT accessible through DASA — if the target is an IIT, the candidate must qualify JEE Advanced. There is no alternative NRI route to IIT admission through DASA.
  • Apply well in advance — DASA has a strict timeline with SAT score submission deadlines that may be before the JoSAA counselling window. Check the DASA schedule in February–March 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JoSAA vs DASA for NRI and foreign candidates

1
What is DASA and who is it for?
DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a centralised admission scheme for NRI (Non-Resident Indian), OCI (Overseas Citizen of India), and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) candidates seeking admission to engineering programmes at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally-funded technical institutes. DASA candidates do not require JEE Main or JEE Advanced scores — they are admitted based on their SAT scores (or equivalent international exam scores) instead.
2
Can an NRI student participate in both JoSAA and DASA?
A student can only participate in one route. If an NRI student has appeared for JEE Main/Advanced and qualifies, they can participate in JoSAA as a regular candidate. If they have not appeared for JEE, they can only access NIT/IIIT seats through DASA. DASA and JoSAA are separate processes — you register for one, not both simultaneously. If you have a valid JEE rank, using JoSAA is generally more advantageous as DASA fees are significantly higher.
3
What is the fee difference between JoSAA and DASA admissions?
Fees under DASA are substantially higher than regular JoSAA fees. DASA candidates typically pay fees comparable to international/NRI quotas — often 3 to 5 times the regular fee. For example, at NITs, regular annual fees (for JoSAA-admitted students) are approximately ₹1.25–1.75 lakh per year, while DASA fees can be ₹3–5 lakh per year. The exact DASA fee structure is published in the DASA information bulletin each year.
4
Do IITs participate in DASA?
No — IITs have their own separate process for NRI/foreign admissions, independent of DASA. IITs admit NRI students through the JEE Advanced-based route if the student has appeared for the exam, or through the DASA scheme only for a very limited number of supernumerary seats at some IITs. Each IIT publishes its own foreign/NRI admission policy — check the specific IIT's admissions page for current rules.
5
What exam scores does DASA require instead of JEE?
DASA primarily uses SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test, administered by College Board) scores as the selection criterion. Specifically, DASA uses SAT Subject Tests or the SAT general test scores. The minimum SAT score requirements and which specific SAT components are required can change — verify with the official DASA 2026 notification at dasanit.org or the NIT Council's official portal.
