CSAB 2026 Seat Acceptance Fee

How much candidates pay after seat allotment, refund rules, and the payment process

What Is the Seat Acceptance Fee?

When CSAB allots you a provisional seat at an NIT, IIIT, or GFTI, you must pay a seat acceptance fee within the deadline to confirm your acceptance. This is separate from the institute's tuition and hostel fees — it is a processing/registration charge collected by CSAB to confirm you intend to join.

The exact amount is announced in the official CSAB information brochure each counselling year and can vary — always check the current figure on csab.nic.in rather than relying on last year's number.

Historically, CSAB (and JoSAA, which uses a near-identical fee structure since both counselling bodies share seat-matrix institutes) has charged a two-tier seat acceptance fee: candidates from General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories have typically paid around ₹35,000, while SC, ST and PwD category candidates have typically paid a reduced amount of around ₹15,000. This fee is usually split into a non-refundable processing component and a refundable/adjustable component that depends on whether the candidate freezes, floats, slides, or withdraws their seat in a later round.

Fee Structure by CSAB Round (Historical Pattern)

Based on the pattern CSAB/JoSAA has followed in recent counselling cycles. Confirm exact 2026 figures on the official portal.

Payment Process

Once a seat is allotted in any CSAB round:

  1. Log in to the CSAB seat allotment portal with your credentials.
  2. Download your provisional allotment letter.
  3. Choose to accept the seat (Freeze/Float/Slide as applicable to that round).
  4. Pay the seat acceptance fee online via net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI.
  5. Complete document verification (online or at a reporting center as instructed).

Missing the payment deadline results in automatic cancellation of the allotted seat — there is typically no manual extension, so mark the deadline clearly on your calendar.

Payment methods accepted on the CSAB portal mirror those used for JoSAA: net banking across most major Indian banks, debit and credit cards (Visa/Mastercard/RuPay), and UPI. A small payment gateway/transaction charge may be added by the bank or gateway provider on top of the base seat acceptance fee — this gateway charge itself is non-refundable even if the main fee is later refunded.

Refund Policy Cross-Reference

The refundable portion of the seat acceptance fee depends entirely on when and how a candidate exits their allotted seat. Broadly, candidates who withdraw within the officially notified withdrawal window (before document verification locks the seat) receive a partial refund after a processing deduction, while candidates who freeze a seat and later don't report for admission typically forfeit the fee entirely. A candidate who floats or slides to a different seat in a later round usually has the fee carried forward against the new allotment rather than refunded and re-charged.

For the complete round-wise refund percentage and the exact processing deduction amount, see our dedicated JoSAA 2026 refund policy page, which covers the equivalent mechanism in detail since CSAB follows a near-identical structure.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Seat Acceptance Fee

Common questions about CSAB seat acceptance fee and payment

1
How much is the CSAB 2026 seat acceptance fee?
CSAB charges a seat acceptance fee (a processing/registration amount set by CSAB each counselling year) at the time of provisional seat allotment. The exact figure is published on csab.nic.in each year — candidates should check the official CSAB 2026 information brochure or seat allotment portal for the current amount, since it can change year to year.
2
Is the CSAB seat acceptance fee refundable?
Part of the fee is typically adjusted as processing charges (non-refundable) while the remaining portion may be refundable if you withdraw within the permitted withdrawal window, following CSAB's published refund schedule. SC/ST/PwD candidates in some years get a reduced fee structure — verify current-year rules on the official portal.
3
What happens if I don't pay the seat acceptance fee?
If you don't pay the seat acceptance fee within the stipulated deadline after seat allotment, your allotted seat is cancelled and you lose your place in that round. The seat may then be offered to the next eligible candidate.
4
Can I pay the CSAB fee offline?
No, CSAB fee payment is done online through the official CSAB portal using net banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI. There is no offline payment option.
5
Does the fee differ between NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats?
The seat acceptance fee structure is generally uniform across CSAB-participating institutes (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs), but always confirm the current fee on the official CSAB website since minor category-based variations can apply.
6
What is the typical fee amount historically charged by CSAB/JoSAA?
In recent counselling cycles, the pattern has generally been around ₹35,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS category candidates, and a reduced amount of around ₹15,000 for SC, ST and PwD category candidates. These are illustrative historical figures — the official CSAB 2026 brochure on csab.nic.in is the authoritative source for the exact current amount.
7
Is the seat acceptance fee the same as the institute's tuition fee?
No. The seat acceptance fee is a processing/registration charge paid to CSAB (or JoSAA) to confirm you are accepting the allotted seat. The institute's own tuition, hostel, mess and other fees are separate and paid directly to the institute at the time of physical/document reporting, typically a much larger amount running into tens of thousands to over a lakh of rupees per year depending on the institute.
8
Will I get a full refund if I withdraw my CSAB seat immediately?
Not entirely. A processing/administrative portion of the seat acceptance fee is non-refundable regardless of how quickly you withdraw. The remaining refundable portion is paid back according to CSAB's published withdrawal schedule, and the refundable percentage typically decreases the later you withdraw relative to the round's deadline.
9
Can I switch from Freeze to Float after paying the seat acceptance fee?
The Freeze/Float/Slide choice is generally locked in at the time of seat acceptance for that round and cannot usually be changed afterward within the same round. If you want a different outcome, you typically need to wait for the next round's choices, subject to CSAB's current-year rules on this.
