CSAB 2026 Eligibility Criteria – Category-wise Rules & Who Is NOT Eligible

A deeper, category-wise breakdown of CSAB 2026 eligibility — including state quota nuances and exactly who gets excluded.

Category-wise CSAB 2026 Eligibility Criteria

CSAB 2026 eligibility is built on the same JEE Main 2026 foundation as JoSAA, but the category-specific requirements determine whether your particular rank, certificate, and academic record actually qualify you for a seat. The table below breaks down the exact requirement per category rather than treating eligibility as one uniform rule.

Who Is NOT Eligible for CSAB 2026?

  • Candidates already settled in JoSAA: If you accepted a JoSAA seat, paid fees, and completed physical reporting (Final/Freeze status) without withdrawing, you cannot simultaneously hold a CSAB seat. You must officially withdraw from JoSAA first.
  • Foreign nationals, NRIs, and OCI candidates: CSAB 2026 is exclusively for Indian nationals competing on the JEE Main CRL/category merit list. Foreign nationals and NRIs should apply through the DASA scheme administered separately by NIT Trichy.
  • Candidates without a valid JEE Main 2026 qualification: Simply appearing for JEE Main is not enough — you must have a valid, qualifying CRL or category rank as per NTA's published cutoff percentile for 2026.
  • Candidates with lapsed or invalid category certificates: An expired OBC-NCL/EWS certificate, or one issued in the wrong (state-list) format, effectively disqualifies a candidate from claiming that category's relaxed eligibility — though they may still be considered under General category if their rank qualifies there.
  • Candidates below the Class 12 percentage/percentile threshold: Falling short of 75%/65% aggregate AND the top-20-percentile alternative makes a candidate ineligible for admission to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs regardless of JEE Main rank.

State Quota Eligibility Nuances

NITs reserve 50% of seats for Home State (HS) candidates and 50% for Other State (OS) candidates. Your HS/OS classification is based on where you completed Class 12 — not your domicile certificate or birthplace — and this classification carries over unchanged from your original JoSAA registration into CSAB. A common misconception is that candidates can re-declare their home state when registering fresh for CSAB; in practice the classification locked in during JEE Main/JoSAA registration is what CSAB uses.

A second nuance applies to candidates from Union Territories without a NIT (e.g., Chandigarh, Puducherry residents who passed Class 12 elsewhere) — these cases are handled under specific pool rules defined in the CSAB information bulletin, and candidates should verify their exact HS/OS mapping rather than assume it based on general state rules.

Frequently Asked Questions – CSAB 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Category-wise eligibility questions and exclusions for CSAB 2026

1
Who is NOT eligible for CSAB 2026?
You are NOT eligible for CSAB 2026 if: you already accepted and physically reported to a JoSAA seat without withdrawing; you are a foreign national, NRI, or OCI candidate (these go through DASA instead); you did not qualify JEE Main 2026 with a valid CRL or category rank; your Class 12 aggregate falls below the required threshold without qualifying via the top-20-percentile route; or your category certificate is invalid, expired, or not in central-list format for OBC-NCL candidates.
2
Does CSAB 2026 have a separate qualifying percentile for Class 12?
No separate CSAB-specific percentile exists — CSAB uses the same Class 12 eligibility rule as JoSAA: candidates need either 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST) in the qualifying exam, OR a rank within the top 20 percentile of their respective board's successful candidates. If you satisfied this for JoSAA, you automatically satisfy it for CSAB.
3
How does home state quota eligibility work differently in CSAB?
Home State (HS) and Other State (OS) quota definitions in CSAB mirror JoSAA — your home state is determined by where you passed your Class 12 examination, not your domicile or birthplace. One key nuance: if you are applying to CSAB after missing JoSAA entirely, your home state classification is locked based on your original JoSAA registration data, so you cannot change your declared home state at the CSAB stage.
4
Can a candidate who withdrew from JoSAA apply for CSAB with a different category certificate?
No. The category you declared during JEE Main registration and used throughout JoSAA carries forward into CSAB. You cannot switch from, say, OBC-NCL to General or vice versa at the CSAB stage — category changes are only possible through NTA's correction window during JEE Main registration itself, which closes long before CSAB begins.
5
Are repeat/droppers eligible for CSAB 2026 on the same footing as first-time candidates?
Yes. CSAB 2026 eligibility depends only on your current year's valid JEE Main 2026 score and qualification status — whether you are a first-time test-taker or a repeater makes no difference to your CSAB eligibility, as long as your Class 12 (or equivalent) was completed within the permitted window recognized by JEE Main 2026.
6
Is there a separate eligibility rule for GFTIs under CSAB?
Most GFTIs follow the same JEE Main-based eligibility as NITs/IIITs within CSAB, but a handful of GFTIs impose additional state-domicile or institute-specific conditions (common for some state-funded GFTIs). Always check the specific GFTI's eligibility note in the CSAB information bulletin before filling it as a choice.
