Verdict: Which Exam to Prioritize?

Prioritize MHT CET if…

  • • Your goal is VJTI, COEP, or top Maharashtra government-aided colleges
  • • You prefer to stay in Maharashtra for engineering
  • • You are from Maharashtra State Board (MSBSHSE)
  • • You want lower fee colleges with strong local placements

Prioritize JEE Main if…

  • • You aspire for NITs (especially VNIT Nagpur, NIT Surathkal, etc.)
  • • You are open to colleges across India
  • • You follow CBSE/NCERT syllabus closely
  • • You have JEE Advanced aspirations (IITs)

Best Strategy: Appear for Both

Appearing for both maximizes your options. Prepare for JEE Main — the higher difficulty level means MHT CET becomes relatively easier. Most Maharashtra students who crack JEE Main at 90+ percentile also do well in MHT CET.

Frequently Asked Questions – MHT CET vs JEE Mains

Common questions about choosing between MHT CET and JEE Main for Maharashtra engineering

1
Should a Maharashtra student focus on MHT CET or JEE Main for 2026?
Both exams serve different purposes and a Maharashtra student should ideally appear for both. MHT CET is essential for VJTI, COEP, and all Maharashtra government-aided colleges through CAP. JEE Main is needed for NITs (including VNIT Nagpur), IIITs, and centrally funded institutes. If your goal is specifically Maharashtra state colleges, MHT CET should be your primary focus.
2
Is MHT CET easier than JEE Main?
MHT CET is generally considered easier than JEE Main in terms of question complexity. JEE Main covers additional topics (entire NCERT syllabus + advanced applications) with negative marking. MHT CET covers Maharashtra State Board syllabus without negative marking. However, MHT CET is extremely competitive among Maharashtra students — a 99.9 percentile in MHT CET is just as hard to achieve as a good JEE Main rank.
3
What JEE Main percentile is equivalent to 99 percentile in MHT CET?
There's no exact equivalence, but rough correlations suggest: 99 percentile in MHT CET may correspond to 97–98.5 percentile in JEE Main for the same student, since JEE Main has more difficult questions and a national candidate pool of 13 lakh vs MHT CET's 4.5 lakh Maharashtra candidates. Many strong students score slightly higher in MHT CET than JEE Main percentile.
4
Can I get into VJTI Mumbai with only JEE Main score?
Not through the normal CAP route. VJTI Mumbai admits primarily through MHT CET CAP. JEE Main candidates can apply for a small number of seats under the JEE Main merit-based quota at COEP Pune, but VJTI doesn't have such a provision in the standard CAP process. For VJTI, you need a strong MHT CET score — 99.99+ percentile for CSE.
5
If I score 95 percentile in JEE Main, should I still appear for MHT CET?
Absolutely yes. At 95 JEE Main percentile, you might get a mid-tier NIT or IIIT. But with 95+ percentile in MHT CET, you can access several good Maharashtra engineering colleges including government colleges in Nashik, Aurangabad, and private colleges like Symbiosis, MIT Pune. Maharashtra colleges with 95 MHT CET percentile often have comparable placements to mid-tier NITs in engineering.
