MHT-CET Home University vs Other University Seats — Explained

How Maharashtra's university-zone seat quota works, and how it affects your CAP cutoffs

Understanding the University-Zone System

Maharashtra's engineering colleges fall under different university zones — such as University of Mumbai, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Shivaji University Kolhapur, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, and others. During MHT-CET's Centralized Admission Process (CAP), each college reserves a defined share of its seats for candidates whose Home University (the zone where they completed their qualifying education) matches the college's university zone.

Candidates from a different zone compete for the remaining seats under the Other University quota. This structure is conceptually similar to how NITs split seats into Home State and Other State quotas, but it operates purely within Maharashtra's CAP system and is based on university zone, not state domicile.

Impact on Cutoffs

Since Home University seats draw from a smaller, geographically local applicant pool, their cutoff percentile/rank requirement is typically a bit more relaxed than Other University seats at the same college, which compete against applicants from across Maharashtra. For sought-after colleges in Mumbai or Pune, the Other University cutoff gap compared to Home University can be significant in competitive branches like Computer Engineering and IT.

Frequently Asked Questions — Home University vs Other University

Common questions about Maharashtra's university-zone seat quota system

1
What does 'Home University' mean in MHT-CET admissions?
Maharashtra's engineering colleges are grouped under regional universities/university zones (e.g., Mumbai University, Pune University/SPPU, Shivaji University, etc.). Your 'Home University' is the university zone where you completed your qualifying (12th standard / HSC-equivalent) education. A certain portion of seats at colleges within that zone is reserved as 'Home University' seats for candidates belonging to that same zone.
2
What is an 'Other University' seat in MHT-CET CAP rounds?
'Other University' seats are the seats at a college that are open to candidates whose Home University is different from the university zone the college belongs to. For example, a student whose Home University is Pune (SPPU) applying to a college under Mumbai University zone would compete for Mumbai University's 'Other University' quota seats, not its Home University quota.
3
Is Home University vs Other University the same as Home State vs Other State quota?
No — they are different concepts, though structurally similar. Home State/Other State quota (used by NITs) distinguishes candidates by their state of domicile. Home University/Other University quota is specific to Maharashtra's MHT-CET CAP process and distinguishes candidates by the university zone within Maharashtra where they studied, regardless of whether they are Maharashtra residents overall.
4
Do Home University cutoffs differ from Other University cutoffs?
Yes. Home University seats typically have a relaxed (higher rank/lower percentile) cutoff for local-zone candidates, since the pool of eligible Home University applicants is naturally smaller and localized. Other University seats draw from a larger, more competitive pool across Maharashtra, so cutoffs for Other University seats at popular colleges tend to be tighter (better rank/percentile required).
5
How many seats are allocated under Home University vs Other University quota?
The exact percentage split is defined each year by the Maharashtra State CET Cell / DTE Maharashtra in the official CAP information brochure, and it can vary by seat type (State-level, Institute-level, etc.). Do not assume the percentage split from a previous year carries over — check the current year's official CAP brochure for the exact Home University / Other University seat distribution.
6
Does my Home University affect my chances at colleges outside Maharashtra?
No — the Home University vs Other University distinction applies only within Maharashtra's own CAP (Centralized Admission Process) for colleges affiliated to Maharashtra universities. It has no bearing on admissions outside the state or on JoSAA/CSAB processes for NITs/IIITs.
